The player pool depth debate

The difference with NZ is that Auckland is a reasonably nice place to live. Hotels in Port Moresby have iron security doors on the rooms violent crime is so high.

You would never convince a non Papua New Guinean to sign for a side based there, and a good chunk of the best talent from there would seek to leave too.

A PNG franchise is not viable until PNG stops being a third world country.
This. Queensland cup franchise and strengthening the digicel cup is the way to go for PNG.

Absolutely! It would be great to have a PNG team in the NRL. It would do wonders for the current comp and the international game, however security and desireability are the two biggest issues with the set up.

Timbo is right in saying you'd be hard pressed to find a non-local who would want to relocate to PNG with their family unless they were a young, single fella on a massive contract. Desireability has always been an issue. Not too long ago the Raiders were struggling to sign big names to the club because Canberra isn't exactly the most desireable place to live. It's only through having Ricky there and some success on the field that they are starting to attract players..... albeit a group of Poms who have traded one cold, expensive shithole for another (chill, all tongue in cheek).

Then there is security. it is only a couple of years ago the the U/18s or PM's XIII were over there when the field was rushed by the crowd. The claim later was the the locals thought a flood light was going to fall on them that they decided to jump onto the field (whether you believe that or not). There would need to be a significant increase in barrier security at the field alone. Hotels have their own security there so they are somewhat protected in that respect and in close proximity to the field. I'd be more concerned with the visiting players if they are overnighting there and decide to go out on the town..... especially if they've just beaten the local side in "controversial" circumstances. Policing over there isn't exactly the gold standard, in fact theres a good chance the cops would be in on it.

I suppose my last inject would be about corruption. the PNG political system has always been one of the most corrupt in the world.... syphoning public money and the like. I'd struggle to believe that there wouldn't be corruption and salary cap mismanagement in an NRL team. There are plenty of teams here that have already been caught out on that one.

The other example I would give - have a look at how many South African cricketers there are plying their trade in New Zealand and England as either naturalized citizens or having a grandparent from there. There's more money in England, sure, but not New Zealand. There is, however, significantly less chance of being beaten to death for your iPhone in Dunedin than Durban.

Even with security - you'd be a virtual prisoner the whole time you were there. It is not viable now, nor for decades into the future.

This. The hunters playing in the Queensland cup is sufficient for exposing kumul talent to the NRL or even super league.

I’d also look to introduce a hunters u18&u20’s side and maybe even another PNG Queensland cup franchise based in Lae.

The junior sides entering the Q Cup junior setup is a must for me. Another team would be nice but may not be necessary if the domestic league and professional pathways are all firing.

One solution to player pool depth is going from 13 players to 11 players or even 10.
That would be about 50 players to divide up. You could have 5 new teams.

You could do that but it wouldn’t be rugby league. It’s bad enough that we have so much inconsistency at international level as it is.

Or realise the "lack of player talent pool" is a furfy and talented players already exist just waiting to be given an opportunity! ? In fact news of more clubs entices more players. But don't let reality get in the way of stifling rugby league growth. :relaxed:

No it doesn’t as I just said it was a dumb idea.

My comment is integrally related to a discussion on player depth which is the ultimate theme of this thread. You are the ignoramus in all of this! So keep the low life chatter and deflection off site thanks.

The quote was anso is absolutely related to the topic. It's pointing out you have completely forgotten about current player depth and future player growth numbers alligned with more clubs. Let's just put as enligreening your comments that lack reality and thoughtful substance. Wacko head !

My comment made no mention of player depth though. Can you actually read?

It would still be rugby league, except better and more like how rugby league was 50 years ago. Reducing players on the field solves a lot of problems in the game.

I'll be getting to the World Nines at Bankwest in a few months. I think twig a few rules of nines (like up it to 11) and it will be the future of RL.
