The difference with NZ is that Auckland is a reasonably nice place to live. Hotels in Port Moresby have iron security doors on the rooms violent crime is so high.
You would never convince a non Papua New Guinean to sign for a side based there, and a good chunk of the best talent from there would seek to leave too.
A PNG franchise is not viable until PNG stops being a third world country.
Absolutely! It would be great to have a PNG team in the NRL. It would do wonders for the current comp and the international game, however security and desireability are the two biggest issues with the set up.
Timbo is right in saying you'd be hard pressed to find a non-local who would want to relocate to PNG with their family unless they were a young, single fella on a massive contract. Desireability has always been an issue. Not too long ago the Raiders were struggling to sign big names to the club because Canberra isn't exactly the most desireable place to live. It's only through having Ricky there and some success on the field that they are starting to attract players..... albeit a group of Poms who have traded one cold, expensive shithole for another (chill, all tongue in cheek).
Then there is security. it is only a couple of years ago the the U/18s or PM's XIII were over there when the field was rushed by the crowd. The claim later was the the locals thought a flood light was going to fall on them that they decided to jump onto the field (whether you believe that or not). There would need to be a significant increase in barrier security at the field alone. Hotels have their own security there so they are somewhat protected in that respect and in close proximity to the field. I'd be more concerned with the visiting players if they are overnighting there and decide to go out on the town..... especially if they've just beaten the local side in "controversial" circumstances. Policing over there isn't exactly the gold standard, in fact theres a good chance the cops would be in on it.
I suppose my last inject would be about corruption. the PNG political system has always been one of the most corrupt in the world.... syphoning public money and the like. I'd struggle to believe that there wouldn't be corruption and salary cap mismanagement in an NRL team. There are plenty of teams here that have already been caught out on that one.
