the red zone kicking game of tim smith and john morris

i just wanted to reflect on how brilliant these two players were in the red zone throughout our 2005 campaign. i think this is what's missing from our current team

do you remember all the perfectly placed grubbers? the bombs that would go so high that you could actually go to the bar and get a drink then sit back down before they would even land in the hands of our wingers? the banana kicks? the ball would curve through the air, reflecting the shape of a banana, which is curved. the kicks off the side of the boot that looked like errors, although they were in fact not errors? they were all great kicks. you knew that when we got close to the try line, we were going to cross it, or at least give it a god damn good go. that's what we came to expect with john morris and tim smith leading our team

don't get me wrong, i love our halves now... it would just be great to have one or two of these great kickers back in our team to complete our attacking arsenal. just not tim smith though... he has too many other issues

Yep, I worked hard to inspire DA, Ozzie & Co to recruit Tim Smith ASAP this year. When I joined this awesome forum, my early posts were full of the reasons why why why Tim Smith, and nothing has changed this perspective ever since. Tim Smith is one MASSIVE nightmare that may come back to haunt the Eels. He will get his head together, and barring injury, he might become one of the better 7's seen since Andrew Johns, Alan Langer and Peter Sterling, during the next ten years or so. Lets inspire the Eels top 25 recruiters to get him back before its too late.

Daniel Mortimer and Kris Keating will be brilliant for us. Perhaps not as naturally gifted as Tim, but they aren't exactly average, and they have fantastic attitudes.

he was really keen to re-join us, happy to take a massive pay-cut too, I know that we already have a couple of number 7s, but honestly, Timmy is more naturally gifted and I would love to have him back, he would have to earn a first grade jumper back. I think that if given the opportunity he can really set the NRL alight. I think he is a risk worth taking, and I would like to see it taken before it is too late ...

even though this is a thread created by half, about john morris, I actually agree with it .... our short kicking game needs alot of work and if sorted out could take us alot further

Yep, he needs to work his way back up through the ranks to get to the top again.... and he will. The Eels now have a great coach, CEO, strong supportive coaching staff, officials and a great bunch of highly skilled players with a hard-work-ethic, winning attitude, who really care about each other, etc, etc. Timmy will truly blossom under such a focused, disciplined, never give up attitude within a happy environment.

if we give him another shot and I am not sure that we will, although I would really like to see us do so

How we give the guys who are at Parra now a shot, guys who want to be here and won't leave when the going gets tough. Umm just a thought.....

Mateo can perform those banana kicks, etc. Maybe not as accurate as timmy though but if he plays 13, you would not see him do them

We need a good kicker for No 7. I do not think our present No 7 can deliver. We need someone like Tim smith, yes Tim Smith. I was quite surprised that we extended Robson's contract.

I disagree.

Mortimer has a TOP SHELF short kicking game. Most of his kicks are spot on. And he has demonstrated it he can also tuck it under and run to the line.

The problem was at about round 26 Hayne suddenly became out 5th tackle option and we missed out on alot of Mortimers kicking. I believe this was a DA direction based on Mort's inexperience.

Will be a different story in 2010.

Mortz doesn't have a kicking game anywhere near as good as Tim Smith. However, I do hope he can work on it because sometimes our 5th tackle option has been very erratic. We usually get away with because Hayne can run around like a headless chook and not get tackled.

That's ok once in a while but 80% of the 5th tackle option is not percentages.

Yeah Morts isnt up there with Timmy on kicking game, but his last month of footy was very very promising with his kicking game.
