The Return of Gasnier?

SUPERSTAR centre Mark Gasnier is poised to make a stunning NRL comeback this season - and it's likely to be with his old club the Dragons.
The former St George Illawarra star has cut short a holiday in France, where he has been playing rugby, to rush back to Australia with his wife Claudine.

Claudine's father was diagnosed with cancer late last week.

The pair spent much of yesterday at Royal North Shore Hospital.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the champion centre is keen to return to St George Illawarra or a rival NRL club before the June 30 deadline for signing players this season.
The Newcastle Knights are also in the running for his signature, but only if the Dragons are prepared to relax a clause in his 2008 release that he can't play for another NRL club before 2012.

Dragons boss Peter Doust has already met with NRL boss David Gallop and salary cap auditor Ian Schubert to investigate ways of squeezing him into this year's cap and back-ending the deal.

"We've worked out it can be done if his price is right," a Dragons source said.

Asked how keen coach Wayne Bennett was about doing a deal, the highly placed source said: "Wayne would love to coach Mark Gasnier."

Yes, its the TellingCrap and Rothfield, but he seems pretty certain in the article.

The "if his price is right" is a big IF. Whats stopping him from going to a Super 15 club?

Id accept him back if he came, but definatly not for Origin! Like Phil is suggesting.

THERE is nothing to stop Mark Gasnier playing State of Origin for the Blues this season if he does a deal with an NRL club in the next two weeks.
But coach Craig Bellamy and the selectors would probably only call on him if the Blues lost the first game on May 26 or had injury problems with established centres.

At this stage, Jamie Lyon, Michael Jennings, Matt Cooper and Chris Lawrence are the front-running centres to wear the Blues jersey.

You could never pick Gasnier for game one when he has been out of rugby league for two years.

But let's get fair dinkum here, the Blues have lost four straight seasons and should do anything within the rules to knock off the Maroons this year.

Gasnier has just completed his second year in France and there is nothing wrong with his fitness. He was still playing rugby two weeks ago and, if anything, his body is in better shape than when he last played in the NRL because of a lack of body contact in the three-quarter line in French rugby.

Gasnier has the support and admiration of his peers and the Blues would welcome him back with open arms if they ran into injury problems.

I really doubt St George will pay big money for Gasnier when they have Matt Cooper and Beau Scott in the centres.

Easts!!!!! We could do with a centre of his quality

He won't be going anywhere unless we allow him to. He isn't allowed to play for any other NRL club until 2012, it was a condition of his release.

I don't see this happening though, he'd surely sign with a super 14 club.

If he plays Super 14 he will be away from home for long periods. Defeats to purpose of coming home for family reasons

I had a source on this last week

All he said at that point was that he really wants to come back to the saints....

If money can be found it seems to be a sure thing!
