The Rugby League World Cup Trophy.....All FIVE Of Them!!!

Messages

Im making a history section for my web site and I want to get done a peice of history many people dont know about the Rugby League World Cup.

The first trophy used for the World Cup at some stage went missing for YEARS.

Anyway a guy found it on day lying in a ditch and from memory he got it cleaned up and was going to use it for a junior competition. Then someone saw this trophy and basically said "Where on Earth did you find this?"

During the time the original World Cup went missing, a plain version was used and won many times before the Original found its rightfull place and I think was used once again for the 2000 World Cup.

Anyway, what Im after is the facts.

If anyone knows the FULL story, with names, places and dates, could they e-mail me from my web site here: http://nospam49.playiirl.com/contact_us.html

I ve herd various stories on this subject.

1. The one you stated
2. It is no longer used and is in RL HQ in France
3. It is bullsh*t and is in France...

I would love to hear the full story. Anything on RL1908?

No.

Ive read a really indepth history of the World Cup (Cant remember where!) and I know the story...I just need the cold hard facts.

The Original World Cup was used again in the 2000 competition and can be viewed at the ARL.

I might contact them on Monday and see if they can help me out.

The trophies featured on the front cover of the book ' The Rugby League World Cup' are obviously two different cups. The Aussies are definately not holding the cup won by the Poms in 1954. Will have to dig out the photo I had taken of me and the cup when I tracked down the French RL HQ in 1998, and check if it looks like the original.

The picture on the front of that book is Clive Sullivan, with the 1972 world cup. So that isn't the original World Cup trophy.

Yeah see...thats the oiriginal world Cup that went missing for YEARS and was eventually found in a ditch.

While that one was missing, the more plain trophy was used.

What Im interested in is getting all the facts to the story.

Ok...this is really interesting.

I have five different pictures of players being handed the Rugby League World Cup.

ALL OF THEM ARE DIFFERENT!

With some great help from the 1908 web site, I have two pictures from 1954 and 1968 or the original WC in use.

The 2000 World Cup also used the original.

In 1970, 1988, 1992 and 1995 four different trophies were used.

If anyone could help me find a picture from the other World Cups, atleast I'll know how many stories I have to chase up.

The missing World Cup were:

1957, 1960, 1972, 1975 and 1977.

Just a picture of a player holding the WC would do.

The trophy donated by French RL President Paul Barriere for the first World Cup in 1954 (as held aloft by Dave Valentine, captain of GB) was also played for in 1957 in Australia.

I have video of all of the 1957 World Cup matches, including the first between GB and France at the SCG before more than 50,000.

The trophy can be seen in the presentation which was made before the Australia v Rest of the World game at the conclusion of the tournament.

Jacques Merquey throws a memorable pass in that (final) game that I still think defies the laws of gravity. A genius if ever there was one...

The reason they got a new cup for the 1970 World Cup was because of the emergence of a sponsor.

The Courtney Goodwill Trophy acctually wasn't a World Cup trophy, it was a trophy that was designed before the first world cup and was to be handed out seperately to the World Cup after 1954.

More or less it rewarded consistency rather than the team who blitz the world cup. This was shown a few times when NZ held the trophy yet didn't even win a game in some world cups.

Still, I'll throw that in as a sidenote for sure.

I think its a trophy that certainly has its place in the game. Its something that should be brought back in with a real system that is in place to determine who holds the trophy.

I'm pretty sure its still in circulation...its just Australia has been that dominant for that long, no other nation has even been in contention since the early 70's that they just leave it at ARL HQ and don't bother with the presentations anymore.

Its not something thats going to change any time soon either, whilst GB and NZ can pull off the occational upset, none are dominant over 4 yrs.

It's amazing all the great history and beautiful trophies the game has. Pity we forget about them and don't really respect our traditions.
