My first full time employment at the CBA was at L&C Sts in the Tapes & Printers and Comms Room, great days back then, eye opener.
All that equipment that you used in those days were state of the art stuff Ayios which you had trained on and I bet you would not have dreamed what would come around in the next 40 + years and now of course how the technology has changed.

Do you remember the Bognor Hotel which was across the road from the bank in Castlereagh Street? My watering hole for years after work with all the mates. Great days alright.

I started as a junior batch clerk at ANZ in QLD in 69. The most modern equipment was an adding machine with tape. The best thing about the job was twice a day all the junior clerks from the banks would meet up to do cheque exchange at the CBA branch. Lots of laughs and tall stories. Woe betide if your list of cheques didn't add up.

Junior at the NBA Edgecliff starting Jan 1980, we didn’t have computer terminals or even calculators on the desks yet. Had a big crunch machine that i used to balance up at the end of the day. I think it was a Burroughs maybe? Had about 10 columns of digits and you only selected the ones that had a number, a big enter key off to the right and it would crunch the figure onto the batch paper. Anyone remember those?

By the end of the year I was at Oxford Sq Darlo, under the Koala Motel and above the greyhound bus station - the Cops are just near there now at Pelican St.
Over the next couple of years I had the habit of stopping off at the Century Tavern on the way home.

Yes, Friday nights was the night about 10 of us guys and a couple of gals would meet and greet and then it was off to the clubs or discos. The Bognor Hotel's Licensee was Len Mooney and for years he had hair on his head and then all of a sudden one year, he decided to take his wig off. Hahaha! He thought, whats the use wearing it - bald as a badger, not that there's anything wrong being bald but it was so funny seeing him with no hair all of a sudden, it was a classic.

The pub changed its name to the Tudor Inn after Mooney left it. I don't think there is a pub there now??

Anyway, small world as they say Ayios and you never know we might have bumped into each other one of those nights. Cheers!

Used to go to that centre near greyhound terminal everyday in ‘80 to get lunch. I too used to stop off at the Century Tavern on the way home. Even jumped on the piano a couple of times there and knocked out a few tunes….

Is that the Pub Cnr Liverpool and George st's?
With the WHS stairs?
I studied (No I didn't) at UTS - Brickfield hill (Hole) and went there after UNI every night
Those stairs were a nightmare, lucky I never broke my neck leaving, but the pub was awesome

Good one Inisai. Nothing like knocking out a few tunes when you have had a few to drink. My favourite thing was also to sing a few Frank Sinatra songs and all the mates would chime in and singalong. It was singalong with Dave night haha.

Started as batch clerk in 1977 at NBA Engadine. Went on to Miranda, Caringbah, Castlereagh St and Unanderra branches as a ledger examiner then teller. Bank jobs were a good pathway for those that didnt matriculate or wish to do Uni.

Yes, hard to beat ‘old blue eyes’, just couldn’t quite hit the notes like him, though at the time I thought I did…probably sounded more like Marlon Brando in the Godfather..

100% Gareth.

In between the rumours we oldies like to reflect back over the time when we were young at heart, just out of school and starting work. One of the things I had to do was open up a bank account so that I could deposit my pay into it - feeling all grown up.

In those days the banks, well mine was the Commonwealth Bank of Australia situated on the corner of Liverpool and Castlereagh Streets, Sydney South opposite what is now the Dowling Centre Courts and I used to work above the bank in an office environment for the government. The bank was always busy. It was an open office where you could see all of the many staff sitting behind the counters occupied by the tellers and enquiry staff. I can remember having to queue up at one of about 4 tellers hoping that your line would move along quickly so that you can get out and have a counter lunch at the nearby pub. I tended to pick the wrong line most times. It took ages for the queuing system to change to a roped off one line affair.

Security at the banks was non-existent and yes there were the hold ups all over the place which brought about more stringent security measures.

One thing that I was so glad to open was a cheque account because by having such an account you could make stacks of payments by filling out the cheque, signing it and crossing it with the words "not-negotiable" and putting into an envelope with the butt of the bill and bob is your uncle. Little did I and anyone else know at the time that future processing of payments would become more streamlined and now we have online banking - easy peasy stuff. But back in the day it was what it was and it made me feel important and in 50 years time what will the kids of tomorrow have to do to pay for things? Your guess is as good as mine.
Geez, one of my first jobs was a teller at CBA Brighton. Got held up twice in one week.
first one was a gun in my face. Craig young was the detective
and the second time the bloke had no gun, so I had the shits so I chased the f**ker. Didn’t catch him though.
Left soon after

You had bravado in those days stretch. Bit scary with a gun in your face. Hold ups were pretty frequent in the old days that is for sure.
