The Rumours Thread

Setu Tu is a very curious case, even aside from the whole "aged 27 with 0 first grade games" thing.

He was actually signed to the inaugural Dolphins NRL squad on a T&T deal in 2023 and played in their opening trial.. but didn't stick it and was with the Warriors by March.
Then again last November he signed a 2 year deal with the Brisbane Tigers in Q Cup, but played 1 game for them and was back at the Warriors in April.

All very curious to me. He was highly rated but never cracked NRL. Perhaps he lacked maturity
Sounds like he gets home sick.

Been told he is a big chance and it's between us and the Tigers.
I do think Adam for 2026 offers something a little different in our pack

he is a bit of a Neville Costigan style middle but I prefer Curran off the bench who has more attack

sometimes it is a tipping point of depth and experience and grit which both these two guys have and can add to our young forwards

Competition for spots is important to stimulate better training and game day performance

plus they would offer cover if LPT and or Halangahu are cherry picked by the new teams offering ridiculous money we can’t match

both wouldn’t be bad on two year deals 2026 if we can’t dislodge a big middle or half for 2026 ie both about $500k pa players is my guess

The negative would be they would take up $1m between them in 2027 or atleast $500k in 2027 if one stays

that’s a lot of money better tilted towards a Tino if possible

We do have to spend the cap though and we seem to have a lot of $ available

I’m guessing our other course for 2026 given it’s training days still and very unlikely to be in the top8 is that we maybe pre paying some current contracted players ie higher amount $ in 2026

someone like Egan, LPT or Couchman T, Sua or Hamish? etc ie to get them to sign longer contracts ?

Word in the media is that Raiders and Eels going hard for Koloamatangi… not a mention of Dragons….yes I know people will say no one knows what we are doing behind closed doors… but these journos generally know what’s happening

The journos are clueless. They operate in the "start-a-rumour" world. I especially like the "5 possible landing spot....." stories. They pretty much say...."I don't have a clue, but my editor expects a story from me..."

Adam Elliot is not terrible, he'll surprise a lot of people in here if he comes. Solid performer who can run for decent metres and pass through the middle. Anyone expecting Stewart to handle a full season at lock with no back up option behind him has got rocks in their head. Completely unfair to expect that from him. Great young talent, but he needs some help. Ryan could help there, but he's coming off the back of an ACL and is another young, inexperienced option. Again, these young guys need some help.

Elliot can also play prop, and we desperately need more options there. He's had some trouble with injuries, so hopefully he can stay on the field. If he does come, it will be a short-term deal in any case. Better than Guler, as a starter he is better than Kerr, and he is 1000x better than Lawrie. Anyone keeping that useless plod out of the side is a bonus

Is Adam Elliot and upgrade on JDB...seems we have let a few reasonable players go and now trying to fill their spots with players who are no better...

I would argue he currently is. I think JDB is done if I'm honest. Defensively he dropped off significantly this year and got away with it due to others being crap and the nostalgia involved in him leaving for some fans. Came up with some really brain dead plays too, at crucial times when we were under the pump (giving away stupid penalties that could have, and in some instances did, cost us). He failed to cover from the inside defensively several times, and looked spent towards the end of the year. Father time is catching up with him.

def not terrible but we let JDB go - a stalwart lifer - who would have completed the same role for similar dollars. I dont get it

I guess we signed a journeyman in Tom Eisenhuth at aged 31, but at least Eisenhuth was coming from a strong system and had played in big finals games.. and we didn't really have gun young forwards for him to hold back. Aside from being 31 years old, Elliott just won a wooden spoon, he isn't a big body, hasn't ever been a rep player so he doesn't bring that experience and mentality (like Gutho, Cook, Holmes & Klemmer) and is coming off half a season of rehab due to a soft tissue injury.. and he has some good young forwards competing with him like Stewart and the Couchmen

As a depth signing I guess you can always justify it but I'd hoped we'd be aiming for better
