Selwyn Cobbo has held secret talks with the Dragons as the Cowboys and a third NRL club plot poaching raids on the out-of-favour Broncos sensation.

This masthead can reveal the ex-Queensland Origin star flew to Sydney for preliminary talks with St George Illawarra bosses earlier this month in the strongest sign yet Cobbo is on the verge of quitting the Broncos.

But the Dragons are not the only club eyeing off Cobbo, with Brisbane’s fierce rivals and 2015 premiership nemesis the Cowboys also weighing up a possible move for the Broncos matchwinner.

Well-placed sources have confirmed the Dragons, Cowboys and a third suitor have expressed interest in the Cherbourg flyer.

But whether they ultimately sign him depends on Cobbo’s asking price.

Cobbo’s preference is to remain at the Broncos, but salary-cap pressures will almost certainly force him out of Red Hill at season’s end.

Broncos chiefs have had dialogue with Cobbo’s management for several months in a bid to navigate Brisbane’s salary-cap minefield and strike a deal that is palatable to both parties.

But the retention of Adam Reynolds, Blake Mozer and Cobbo’s backline partner Kotoni Staggs, the latter to a $2.4 million extension, has all-but exhausted Brisbane’s salary-cap spend.

The Broncos have yet to make an offer for Cobbo ahead of Sunday’s round 16 clash against the Sharks and it’s understood they can only afford around $300,000 to keep him at Red Hill in 2026.

That means the 23-year-old, who is on $650,000, faces a pay cut of around $350,000 to stay at Brisbane, an unlikely scenario given the market interest in one of the code’s most promising backline properties.

Earlier this season, Cobbo was valued at almost $1 million on the open market, but since being dropped to reserve grade a fortnight ago, his price tag has taken a hit.

It’s understood the Dragons won’t break the bank to sign Cobbo and baulked at the potential length of any-long term deal.

But with the club looking to become a finals contender, coach Shane Flanagan needs some backline strike and they are keen on the former Australian Test ace.

The Dragons have Clint Gutherson on their books but realise his days as a fullback will come to an end at some point.

The 30-year-old is contracted for another two seasons, but may be moved to centre should the Dragons find a potent no.1.

The Dragons’ salary cap is in a strong position for them to make a splash if they believe Cobbo is their man.

The Cowboys are also in the frame.

The club is committed to emerging centres Zac Laybutt and Viliami Vailea - they inked two-year extensions a fortnight ago - but believe Cobbo can add depth to their backline stocks with his utility value.

St George Illawarra and North Queensland are open to signing Cobbo at the right price but won’t be getting into a bidding war for his services.

While Cobbo has previously been linked with the Sydney Roosters, it’s understood the Bondi club will not be making a formal play for the tryscoring sensation.

The Broncos have been told that Cobbo has received interest from rival clubs in the vicinity of $700,000-a-season to leave Brisbane.

That is money the Broncos simply cannot match, however the club has a trump card in its location to his hometown.

Like Latrell Mitchell visiting Taree, Cobbo enjoys the solace of soothing trips home to Cherbourg, fuelling a belief the Indigenous role model would struggle to adjust to life in Sydney.

In May, Cobbo’s manager said he was hoping to strike a deal with the Broncos, but insists he is now more mature to cope with a move interstate.

“Selwyn is open to leaving the Broncos,” said his agent Tas Bartlett.

“As an 18-year-old kid, having just left Cherbourg, he would never have entertained leaving the Broncos.

“But he is 23 and he’s not a boy anymore.

“Selwyn has lived out of home for several years and he is now more mature to the thought of leaving the tent if we can’t do a deal with the Broncos.”

After starring in Brisbane’s 42-18 defeat of Canterbury in late April, Cobbo said: “Cherbourg is not going to run away. Wherever I go, I can always go back home.”

Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy remains hopeful of keeping Cobbo.

“All of us would love nothing more than to see him at his absolute best form,” Donaghy said.

Selwyn hasn’t been there of late, but none of us have given up on him.

“We’ll keep working with him to give him all the encouragement and whatever he needs to try and get him back there.

“Selwyn at his peak is only going to help the squad.”

Cobbo not worth $1m. If his reported contract is currently $650k, it just goes to show how much overs a lower ranked team has to bend its salary cap to get a 'named' player.
for me we need ASAP more strike outside back players sprinkled into our emerging forward pack youth

$550-$700k pa definitely worth the risk for a two year we can back out of and offload for minimal $ difference

For me we dont have many others as options really tht are only 23yrs old / 6 origins and a good experience in NRL already

He gives us flexibility massively re Wing, centre and FB

I dont think that is us chasing clouds...........Cobbo could be anything he wants to be but he could reignite as a gun winger on any given season........change / mindset / work ethic / already has the skills and beyond

Depends if rumours of signing a Knights winger is true.. if so Id be surprised we would be going for Cobbo.. tbf Cobbo's value has plummeted and hes probably meeting with all possible suitors, of which there may be a few.. def agree we wont be offering him more than 700k, wing prices.. maybe centre coverage, def not using him as a fullback.

I swear we started the year talking about how much depth and talent we had for full back and wing. While we have seen some let downs it really isn't worth wasting too much money on over another flaky player - Suli, Sloan, Luc, Cobbo...plenty of upside but so undependable type players who are far too fickle and go missing in matches.

Whatever energy and money we have to go after players needs to be directed twoards that prop and a halfback which we desperately need. It's desperate to the point where we all now realise anything else that happens is pointless.

This was also in the Mole link....

It could relate to Flanno you never know. He came out swinging to the media about missing out on Latu but did he really miss out or covering up for not offering him a contract, which has the players pi$$ed off? Also it could be the halves situation with SFlanno making excuses about depth to keep his son.

The reason I point to Flanno is because his contact is up in 2026.

OFFSIDE COACH UNDER FIRE

Which coach has been caught out by his players telling lies to the media?

The coach concerned has already lost the sheds and the players are now whispering openly about him and his strange ways.

It will be interesting to see if he survives until 2026, with club officials currently evaluating his long-term future.

Heard Carryannis on the ABC saying that it is unlikely things will progress any further with the talks between the Dragons and Cobbo, unless Cobbo changes his terms.
Carryannis said Cobbo is currently looking for a 5 year deal at around $1M per season.
Guessing Cobbo and his management team will need to drastically review and reduce his current asking terms to get another meeting with the Dragons or the Cowboys, who appear to be his only suitors outside of the Broncos at this time.

I recall Schiller years ago was our great white hope going back to his Year 11 days at a country High School when he was killing it and a real standout. We let him finish his schooling and he was going to be our long-term full-back. Somewhere along the way in our lower grades, flaws were discovered- defence and defensive reads from memory, and we let him go. He went to Canberra and they couldn't fix him so now he's at Newcastle.

Do we really think going back to the future is a good idea?
Gee it's hard to say redandwhite4evr. He is a tough bugger, much tougher than Sloan. I'm not convinced that his defence has improved. If we get him, we will just have to see if his future is better with us.

He is nowhere near a $1m player. $700k max is risky enough and 3 years. I think he lacks motivation and just drifts in and out of games too much so no loss if we miss out.

We should just get him for the remainder of the year on loan & see how he adjusts to Sydney or wants to extend the club then can make decision on if they want him long term.

Didn’t he leave us because (or partly) of a feud he has with Lomax?
That’s no longer an issue.

Cobbo is overweight, unfit, disinterested and uninspired at present with the Broncos. Is it him or is something not right with the Club and/or coaching staff? Wasn't Haas also showing signs of similar traits, hence some rumour about him looking elsewhere?

Imo, 700k for 2 or 3yrs is a good investment, and if you can reverse my opening sentence, that would be a steal. Then would you rather have Sloan or Cobbo as your wing/fullback?

The issue is, is he motivated to turn himself around or is he just looking for an early payday?
