He’s probably worth around that, our option was for $900k which we didn’t take up so club clearly doesn’t value him at that level. By all reports he’s pretty happy here so I’d be surprised if he went to another shit club (note I say another) unless it was for a lot more than we offered.

I think Bula would be a good buy. I also feel Burton could also be a option at fullback. He is a good runner of the ball can catch a high ball and can kick a long high ball.

Burton at fullback isn’t something I’d considered, but it might work.

I’d take Bula though. It’s his spot and he’s younger.

If the club thinks he is worth it then it is what it is. Salary cap doesn't affect the fans, as long as the club puts a competitive team together I'll back them. Just like Keaon everyone was whinging we paid overs but Parra offered NAS 800k.. salary figures just give journos something to write about it's not up to us to decide a players worth ffs and I hope we get Bula at 800-900k that's a great figure he will be a star. Dragons from 27 will be a force and everybody knows that

Honestly Gutho will probably be medically retired before his contract is up. Great player but if he plays FB every game this year his body will be destroyed it already is cooked. Tough bastard I hope he retires at the Dragons you couldn't ask for a better competitor

We wouldnt be swapping them, we will be adding Bula, Gutho would still be contracted..

Correct but only for the first year of the new FB contract. If he's re-signed it would be with a haircut, new position and rejigging of the team.
Lots to consider for 2027-2028

I think Gutho will retire end of 2027.. thats 2 full years of footy still to go... and assuming we dont find manage to pull a gun fullback for 2026, he has 1 more year at the back and then 1 more year in some sort of role which is yet to be seen.. I mean if he kills it @ctr or 5/8 who knows if he extends... but I reckon we will be moving onto new things for 2028.. even though we will miss a natural leader like that on and off the field.

Dont think tigers will have any use for Gutho either.. Douieh is probably a younger version of him and proven in the halves.. but Bula may not even leave yet.. he might well just be using us to bump up the offer.

As for value.. I mean Bula is on 800k already iirc, 900k was the increase he wanted.. this is (imo) a future origin fullback... nrly 80 NRL games by next year, and 25yrs of age.. i.e. coming into his absolute prime.. the money is not a problem for us for a few more years yet when our squad is stronger.. but I wouldnt want another 5yr KK deal... 3-4yrs max while he wait for kids like Ollie Burton etc... Bulas actual value is determined by whether he keeps evolving into a rep fullback... it is a risk for us obviously.. but if you want to pull him out of his club, you need to beat the clubs offer by atleast 50k, probably more like the 100k tbh, and we need to recruit someone @1.. there is nothing internal anytime soon.

Note: I assume Koula is not happening, I would have wet myself for a KK/Koula combo (atleast a 1mil player if signed @ fullback imo), but Bula tbf has a lot more experience @ fullback, and I would still be rather excited if those r 2 names for next season.. throw in 1 or 2 more first graders off the back... and thats a proper squad for 2027 and beyond..

Millward is no longer with the Dragons. But Haran and Dean Young should have been moved on for 2026.

Can’t be the 14 as he’s on too much money and liddle or cook is there if he re-signs, only position left is 6 but he doesn’t have the kicking for it and we have King-Togia there by then. Also Shane Flanagan said we want to get another half so don’t think he’ll put Gutho at 6.

If we sign another fullback in 2027, we might have to let Gutho leave early. Maybe go to Perth bears or pay him out.

I'm worried about 2026, I'd rather do a deal with the Tigers and swap Bulla for Gutherson or Sloan for the 2026 season. Some of our current first-grade players will be looked at very closely this season:
