The scrum to be abolished?

Super league in UK have removed the scrum. There is no doubt the Australian Rugby League Commission will be watching closely to see how this effects the game. Gus Gould has called for the scrum to be removed suggesting there no reason to have it in the game because it serves no purpose. He went on to say that it was 'inevitable' that it would happen.

I watched the Warriors vs Titans game the other night and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck scored from a try after a scrum formation. The Titans did a big push in one scrum and almost worked. Refs called it back though as no team got there hands on the ball and got fed in again.

I agree though with Gus though the debate of whether the scrum remains or goes has to have some context. Those suggesting to revive the scrum and revert to scrums of the late seventies/ early eighties are living in a fantasy land. The dangers in terms of neck injuries and slowing down the pace of the game means those days are well and truly over.

i have other ideas
I remember a few years ago Fatty suggested that scrums should just be for when the ball goes into touch. If there's a knock on or forward pass then it's just a turnover. I like that idea
great idea . love it

Tidy them up and there isn't a problem, otherwise we are headed for a game that looks like touch football.

Only way to tidy them up

Is to feed the ball straight instead of behind the props feet

Also teams dont use scrums setup at the 10m mark enough as a attacking option

This is basically how the 9s operate

And we also did this with the ChangeOver rule on the 6th tackle

Today we get about 10 in a dry game and 15 for a wet game

In either case about 60% come from knock ons or forward passes

So by doing a simple changeover you would reduce them to about 4 to 6 a game

I could live with that

They aren’t a contest for the ball anymore. They could improve them by keeping them bound a bit longer so there is actually a 7 on 7 for at least the first play. Keep the pack bound until the ball has been advanced beyond the scrum line.

I say keep them, not because they we really need them but it seems every year we change the game and tinker with the rules all with this stupid idea to make the game more exciting ,interesting and perfect.
It hasn't work yet. How about we just take a breather, leave things the way they are for a little while and concentrate on other issues, like not have morons in the bunker, Once we fix that then we can look at other things,

Scrum play adds another dimension to the game. Abolish scrums, then you also lose the set plays with less players in the line.

Those who think scrums are only about a contest for the ball seem to be unaware of scum plays.

The great strength of Rugby League is that it has aspects of all the football codes and then some.

That said, it does seem the scrum's days are numbered.

I can only imagine the SL admin have weighed up the pros and cons. If they stick by their decision, then Australia will inevitably follow suit.

Teams are deliberately giving away scrum penalties now so they can set their defensive line instead. Of course the referees are oblivious to it as usual.

SL removal of scrum is, I believe, to reduce instances of close contact to reduce potential cases of covid and to get season completed. Not sure it’s been muted as a permanent thing, but could be wrong. Still, be interesting to see how it goes.

The scrum, a victim of Covid? Interesting observation. But there's already enough contact going on without the scrum.

the scrum is absolutely beautiful because it makes the game 7 on 7 for 1 tackle, however the backs have been useless pricks for about 20 years and usually just have a hit up off the scrum, instead of spreading it or doing a set play.

big hit!

Still a viable set piece play. Just get merkins to stick their heads in properly and penalise if there is f**king around.

The 7 on 7 does not really eventuate as the defenses are so well structure and organised in how to deal with breaking from a scrum.
They could make the 7 on 7 actually worth trying to exploit by making the scrum stay packed until the ball is advanced passed the advantage line (scrum line) or the first tackle is complete which ever is first. That way the situation would be worth trying to take advantage of and it would lead to a bit more fatigue.
