The team with the most local juniors

An intersting point of discussion came up in another thread about the the number of local juniors playing for both the chooks and the dogs. Just looking at all the squads, there aren't too many developed within the clubs Juniors. Going through the Parra squad of 25 players which I would expect each one to play at some stage this year, I can see we have 11 local juniors, and 4 players from regional/country areas who were brought to the club and developed. So I guess that makes it 15. I would be suprised if any Sydney team had more than 25% of there squad as local juniors. Penrith and St.george are 2 which spring to mind. Other than that, its not that great.

The players who are locals for Parra include; Hayne, Inu, Grothe, Cayless, Matt Keating, Kris Keating, Mateo, Oake, Robinson, Mitchell & Tautai.

Players from country areas or NZ developed at Parra include; Hauraki, Hindmarsh, B Smith, Fui Fui.

Should we start looking at allocating regions like central coast or coff harbour to teams like the roosters and souffs who have small junior base?

After the mass cleanout at Newcastle last year we wouldn't have anywhere near as many locals as in the past.

Canberra have a very high number of either local juniors or players long been in the system

Canberra locals:
milne, purtell, monaghan, dobson, carney, campese, withers, weyman, thompson, tongue, miller, picker, thurling, herbert, hinchcliffe

Outside of canberra but developed from a young age:
chalk, zillman, jones, goodwin, Graham

South Sydney has over 30% (12/32) in their top 32 squad which are local juniors:

Beau Champion, Beau Falloon, Yileen Gordon, Sam Huihahau, Manase Manuokafoa, Shannan McPherson, Nathan Merritt, Eddie Paea, Eddy Pettybourne,John Sutton, Fetuli Talanoa, Craig Wing.

I would say thats a pretty high ratio given we were out of the comp threfore not too many that where over 25 would be on that list

I though a FG squad consisted of 25 players. Otherwise, if I did the same for Parra, it would be 22/32 players.

I am not going to "investigate", though an educated guess would be Canberra? :?

Although I think there is a case for Wests Tigers after ink's post.

Tongue is from Tamworth and Marshall Chalk was hardly young in football terms when he went to Canberra from Ipswich. There has to be a fair bit of doubt about a few of those others too.

After glancing over your post, there is an argument that the Wests Tigers could make a case for having the most local juniors in their team. As alluded to, whilst Canberra's list is impressive, there are some players listed there who could be removed.

Big Friday night ink?

Yea but tongue was in our system for a fair while, same with Graham who is also a Tamworth lad. Chalk came to us via QLD cup and into PL at 17-18 i believe (but im not too sure on that so happy to be proven wrong)

the only doubt on our others are the size of our district, which i agree is quite large. But they are still considered local juniors

Tongue is not a local junior though. A Canberra junior maybe but not a Canberra local junior. Chalk played a fair bit of Qld Cup before he left so he must have been 19 or 20 when he joined Canberra (it wouldn't be too hard to find out) and if he played his first senior football at Ipswich after coming up from juniors I reckon that makes him an Ipswich junior.

People like to claim players as local juniors when they actually come from elsewhere but just playing for the SG Ball side doesn't make a player local and this thread is about local juniors not just juniors.

Souths don't have a small junior base, there are a lot of clubs in the Souths comp.

Haqyne and INU played their junior football at Cabramatta prior to them playing Parramatta in the Harold Mathews comp.

Technically Parra Juniors.

Lagi Setu - developed by us, from QLD Rugby Union at 16
Ricky Thorby - developed by us
Travis Roche - we bought him down from Dubbo as a 15 year old.

17 players there from the top squad who you could consider junior or close enough too from the Dragons.

in that case, you'd remove tongue and graham, and still have:
And hinchcliffe, i just remembered he is a parra junior

milne, purtell, monaghan, dobson, carney, campese, withers, weyman, thompson, miller, picker, thurling, herbert

still 13/25 and im sure ive forgotten some

I'd imagine Brisbane have a few afterall, traditionally their "local" area has been from Rocky down to Grafton and west as far as the isa
