The Third Test

Another absorbing game, a lesser standard than the first two, but tough and thrilling never the same.

I had written Australia's obituary in my mind by about the 73rd minute, something along the likes of "You just can't keep conceding leads and hoping to run your opponents down, sooner or later you'll come unstuck."

The patience and professionalism shone through again, with a dash of brilliance from our three main attacking weapons, Lockyer, Wing and Kimmorley at the end.

GB were unlucky, they showed enormous courage in defending their line between the 60th and 70th minutes and they deserve enormous credit for that. Unfortunately for them, they again suffered for not playing for the full eighty.

For the winners, I thought Civoniceva was strong. Wing threatened each time he got the ball, Lockyer always looked the man most likely and Darren Smith played like he'd never been away. Ricketson and Fitzgibbon worked like Trojans, we're in danger of taking their contributions for granted, even if Ricko is boring as batshit with the ball in hand. Kimmorley struggled, mixing some good play with some poor options and execution. Buderus was quiet again, he's been so all series. I wonder if that's a reflection of Australia's lack of forward dominance, a testament to England's resurgence in the forwards.

For the Brits, Fielden was strong again, Sculthorpe finally showed something of what he's rated so highly for, Gilmour and Gleeson added penetration, Radlinski had his best game of the series, Long went better than in game 1. Morley had a go but was heavily targetted and his imnpact was minimised.

GB have plenty to build on for the future and should take great encouragement from their performance in this series, despite it being against a much weakened Australian side. they need to unearth some dominant halves, switch Sculthorpe back to lock, a better hooker and one or two more good props. Several of their players would make it int he NRL imo, something I've never thought before.

The answer for GB is easy, it's already there, they just need a coach to realise it:
Horne to fullback
Pryce on one wing, Carney the other. (Gilmour if Pryce gets sent down)
Senior & Gleeson
Danny Orr at 6
Jamie Rooney at 7
13. Sculthorpe
12. Farrell (only if fully fit)
11. Morley
10. Fozzard (best go-forward prop in UK)
9. Cunningham
8. Fielden

14. Danny Sculthorpe
15. Ryan Bailey
16. Jamie Peacock
17. Gareth Hock.

Great game and great series. So could've been 3-0 the otehr way.

Poor marker defence from Lions again. Newton and Mac are wasting their time. Long'd kicking game is awful. Dare I say it but with Deacon on the field GB may have held GB out. Great goal line defence from Lions but their other defence was shocking. They gave the Roos field position. Playing Scully ouyt of position does nothing. Farrell was a bit quiet too.

Can't wait till next year.

For example, the England A team against France
1.Sean Briscoe (Wigan Warriors)
2.Mark Calderwood (Leeds Rhinos)
3.Stuart Reardon (Bradford Bulls)
4.Martin Aspinwall (Wigan Warriors)
5.Ade Gardner (St Helens)
6.Danny McGuire (Leeds Rhinos)
7.Rob Burrow (Leeds Rhinos)
8.Andy Lynch (Castleford Tigers)
9.Matt Diskin (Leeds Rhinos)
10.Rob Parker (Bradford Bulls)
11.Danny Tickle (Wigan Warriors)
12.Gareth Hock (Wigan Warriors)
13.Sean O' Loughlin (Wigan Warriors) (Captain)

Interchange

14.Jamie Rooney (Wakefield Trinity Wildcats)
15.Danny Sculthorpe (Wigan Warriors)
16.Rob Purdham (London Broncos)
17.Ian Sibbit (Warrington Wolves)

If it was Australia, most of them would be in the test team, especially Diskin at 9.

It long past time. The only one I'd argue about is Radlinsky, who missed most of the season and doesn't yet seem to be back to his best form. So why pick him for this series?
