Rightio, my email is sent, i left off the pronounciation part, i urge all other people sick of what we are getting dished up to do the same. My email is below
Am just writing to express my disappointment at the standard of commentary at this current time.
Costigan and Halligan try hard, but they just don't seem to have the natural elements that all good commentators have. The commentaries are full of cliches, and the overuse of the terms "Oranges" "Get out of my way he says" "Boarding Pass" "Fish n Chip Paper" and "Johnny on the spot" make them damn near impossible to listen too. A lot of the comments made during the games are irrelevant, give the wrong information, or are full of a personal bias from one of the crew
I go to a lot of Rugby League websites and forums, and on all of them, including NZ ones, we are ridiculed over the standard we are putting out, and how unprofessional it is. It is embarrassing at times being a kiwi with the poor level of commentary we put out, and the Aussies don't miss a chance to make that known after a game, with clangers from Costigan and Halligan talked about regularly after matches
I know a lot of people that find them unbearable, and mute the TV to tune into the Radio Call.
I think as a country, and a pretty professional TV station, we can put on a lot better broadcast. If we are going to spend money to fly someone over from Australia, then go for the best, and bring back Graeme Hughes, rather than spending the money for a second rate caller. If not, why not give some locals a go, Allen MacLaughlin on Radio Sport is good, Dale Husband does a reasonable job and even Stephen McIvor has gone ok calling the Lions matches.
After 6-7 years of putting up with what is on offer, i thought it best that i get the thoughts off my chest and let someone know what the general league public are thinking, and that is that we can produce a lot better than what it currently on offer.
