The Ultimate Tribute

I say lets win one for Sludge. Black armbands for every game. Dedicate a Premiership to one of the Greatest servants of the club, on and off the field.

Now THAT would be a fitting tribute!!

well i love sludge as much as any self-respecting heterosexual possibly could, but as much as i appreciate the romance of the notion i do think it's unrealistic to re-name the entire ground after him. also as somebody pointed out previously the great man wouldn't want that if meant putting even one dollar of possible sponsorship in jeopardy.

a grandstand or a bar is a fitting and enduring tribute and i have no doubt the club will see this put into action. the auditorium idea sounds ok by me too.

god i hope et (and all of us!) are still here to see us win the premiership one day.

on the ET vs Sludge as greatest shark.........I think it depends on personal opinion. They are, in my understanding outstanding club men of outstanding ability in the same position. My preference is ET but I respect and understand why others would choose Sludge........either way there is little if any between them as far as our club goes and quite frankly it is insignificant in the sad loss we have suffered yesterday.......

He was a timeless player, who glided across the ground with style and grace and would be a star in todays NRL.

He was Cronulla through and through, although my fondest memory of this legend was his first try for Saints a sensational chip and chase try against the Bears. Sharks fans this bloke will never be forgotten by any supporter of the game. I'm still shattered to think he was only 51.

ET v Sludge - I think its pretty clear. ET is the greatest Shark - Never having played for a rival club. Sludge is the greatest player the Sharks have had.

Steve Rogers was compared to Reg Gasnier on more than a few occasions during his career. He was our greatest player no doubt there.IMO

Not taking anything away from our greatest clubman and arguably our second greatest ET.

I like the sound of a statue at the entrance to Shark Park. Great idea. But alas the idea of renaming Shark Park is probably a pipe dream as these days we need the sponsorship dollar. Unfortunately this is a fact of life.

f**k the dollar Pierre! You of all people should see past that! LOL...

Make it up in other ways. Find a way. Think outside the square.

There'd be a company prepared to sponsor the place without naming rights. We just have to look harder.

I had an idea which may work.....

I think the club should approach our jumper manufacturer and the NRL this week and have our 2006 vintage playing strip re-modelled . It should be made as a memorial strip with appropriate wording under the sharks badge that year 2006 is dedicated to Sludge. It should have a BLACK ARMBAND permantly stitched on the sleeve, or part added to the design, and it should be worn EVERY game this season.

THe tribute to sludge by dedicating the year of his passing totally to him and his services would be huge, and his memory and influence will be there each game this year to help drive the club towards achieving the ultimate tribute to him, a premiership.

It would of course be available for fans to buy as a tribute to sludge, and I dare say an arrangment could be made whereby proceeds, or the lions share of them go to the charities sludge has dedicated himself to for a long time, the breast cancer insitute and the childrens hostpital.

Reading the NRL forum I saw this entry from 'Southern Rooster', a some-time LU sparring partner of a few of us:

Apart from him being in a similar mindset to me when I heard the news, I have to agree that in searching for an appropriate tribute for Steve, Southern Rooster has hit the nail right on the head.

When I head to Cronulla to go to the first home game of Season 2006, I want to be walking through the gates of The Steve Rogers Memorial Stadium.

Who's with me?

I am !!!!

Top idea

The best tribute and the only fitting one in my opinion.

Or perhaps, sadly, proceeds to a charity that deals with depression, Beyond Blue .

I think the special jersey is a great idea.

When we get a new scoreboard it could also serve as a shrine to Rogers.

I still say go with the re-naming of the whole ground.

The sum of the parts could never equal the value of the whole.
