There is a cancer growing in our beloved club

Let me first say I love this club, totally. It is and has been a part of my life since 1977. However people since the week leading towards the GF in 2001 when Brian the Braniac decided he would hang with the players down the South Coast, we have been in decline. We have lost players we should not have. We have signed some dodgy replacements. Internationals are retiring at the age of 22 and there are rumors that more are following. Everyone's choice for our half back is on the bench for PL. The recruitment manager that discovered the bulk of our players has gone to Manly. Getting flogged is now common at Parramatta. Soon we will be like we were in the early 90's when no high profile players wanted to come here. There is a cancer in our club people and we must try and remove it now, before it becomes inoperable.

The cancer at this Club is fans like you, mate.

Bugger off, HJ. Avenger has made some valid points. You might not agree, but calling him a cancer of the club is just plain immature and pathetic.

Grow up and act like the lady you are supposed to be!

Avenger, I think a lot of internal problems are coming to a head. Most clubs have them from ime to time, yet Parra's saving grace is probably it's downfall. Like St George (and unlike Cronulla), Parra never do a knee jerk panic reaction. As a hypothetical example, if the Cronulla dramawith Chris Anderson happened at Parra, Ando's contract would be fulfiled. In fact, I don't think the club has ever broken a coaches contract yet. It's actually a very good trait, but you have to get the decisioright in the first place.

When Denis Fitzgerald signed Brian Smith to a massive 5 year deal on GF eve 2001, it was areward forbringing Parramatta the 2001 premiership, thuis crowning the createst season ever. The signature was obtained before what we all presumed awas a fait acompli. Alas, the crown went to the Knights, and the rest is history.

So Fitzy's deal was hasty, and had turned out to be the worst desision in coaching retention made in our history.

One can always go back and find a problem with Smithy. Hell, go back to Chris Lawler starring in a 50 point flogging of the Crushers in '97, and not getting a look in when the test stars that were away returned. And before we all say "every coach has troubles like that" It's a fair point, except I cannot remember other long serving coaches like John Lang, Gus Gould (except with an out-of-control Mark Geyer) Don Furner, Tim Sheens et alseem to have managed to avoid them.

12 months ago I first raied this point. Howled down by the Brian Smith is God movement at the time, it seems that sadly, myeslf and a few others were on the money. I can even remember Suitman and I being told we were not Parra fans for not being Smith fans. Oh how ludicrous those days were!

Brian Smith has been with us for 8 seasons now.many regulars here have never nown life without Smith (and immediately preceeding his era, life as an Eelfan was bleak). It's even longer for those of us who remember when jack Argent and Stan Simpson ran the joint, and Denis Fitzgerald occupied a spot in the communal bath when Bob O'reilly was not farting in it.

The divorce that is coming between the eels and Smith, and possibly Fitzgerald, will be akin to an amputation for some people. Hence the idiocy of the above post by HJ.

Avenger, I'm sure he doesn't really mean that. He's about to undergo an amputation from Brian Smith. Most of us get scared before a majoroperation like that!

Super coach Tim Sheens - it wasn't very long ago at all that Timmy was the doer of all evil with the North Queensland Cowboys....the guy went through hell up there....now a short time later he's super coach again - bringing glory to the Wests Tigers.....some people have short memories.

For right or wrong (I guess wrong as it turns out), John Lang was booted from Cronulla for failing to bring them a premiership.....he had a very tough first year at Penrith where he was hounded for bringing his son (and other ex-Shark players) to the club, for playing Girdler as 5/8, for putting Priddis and Gower in the side when Gower was struggling to get back into the role of 1/2 back - his side finished 3rd last and the knives were out for him.....I'm sure John Lang would have admitted things were pretty bad.....they turned it around and won a premiership.....short memories.

So, lets get hypothetical.....if we boot Smithy and he goes to another club and wins a premiership there (ala John Lang) - who's blood will we be after then? Who will be to blame? - cos, of course, there has to be someone to take the frustrations out on.

Strider, what the hell are you talking about? I was talking about coaches relationships with players and how many of the comparisons had player troubles in such numbers. It had nothing to do with who won what premiership.

BTW, I don;t think Smithy will win a premiership anywhere. Even if he had coached Souths in ;-) 1909 the Bunnies would have lost

I agree Smithy has to take responsibility for some of the mistake. If Smithy has the last laugh on the recruitment I think he has done bad. He has let many good players leave EELS and we have sordid old slowly players like VELLA playing for us. Smith is a good coach and he did a miracle in 2001. I haven't seen any tam playing like that other than PNERITH last year. We did magic. But I think loss like PJ Marsh, Adrew Ryan is going to haunt us in coming season. I guess we have sit and watch we are getting flogged day in and day out.
If we win against Broncos comfortably it will be a huge, I mean huge relief to the players. If not this week is going to haunt them. If we cannot fight like BULLDOGS we are gone.

 yeah lets blame the fans . "wow you stupid parra supporter who dares put down anything that may resemble the truth, its all your fault"
Words of wisdom from some on this board show nothing but blind faith, and to put blind faith in this team is suicide

Thanks for the support Misty Bee and others in sharing my views. HJ I though Jesus was a man, and you I hear a lady. Anyway, as redeel stated some people like you have blind faith in this poorly managed club of ours. Besides in this country you are allowed to have a view. We may differ but in a respectful way. Its called democracy. We do not belittle people because we don't agree. Your immaturity is evident. Keep Yawning!!!!

Brian Smith signed the 5 year contract with Parra early in 2002 from memory, can someone confirm this ?
I dont recall many wanting his head then or saying it was the biggest mistake ever then ?. Certainly no booing at the ground when Brians melon was shown......

The majority of Parra supporters will support Parra no matter who is coach. If / when Brian smith gets the boot or not, is irrevelvant. If people are passionate about removing people at Parra for not doing a good job then there are ways and mean to do so. I dont think attacking fellow Parra supporters who just want to get on with supporting Parra the best way they can is the way to do it somehow.

Dont quote me but I cannot recall a 5 year contract. I thought Brians current contract took him till the end of 2005 season.

He signed a five year extension straight after the GF. He has two years after this year if the club decides to hold on to him. :|

Its nobody at parramata's fault that Killer doesnt want to play
My choice of halfback played halfback on saturday
And i would hardly say that getting flogged is common! Didn't we win 8 of our last 11 or something..

Plenty of people elude to the fact that Smith is the sole problem, and i agree that he has his part to pay. But i think it is probably more to do with him, leaving himself with too much to do, and not trusting others to be able to assist or not wanting to risk using the ideas of others for fear of those ideas failing and he copping the critiscm.
