Thinking positively and Brisbane 2009

Well since Furner is going nowhere I thought i would somehow try and think positively.

I was thinking about the Brisbane Broncos in 2009 when from round 13 to round 21 they had probably their worst run of games in the clubs history which ended in their worst ever defeat at the hands of us 56 - 0. I know many Broncos fans who claimed they felt physically ill after that game. Even watching it as a Raiders fan you couldn't help but feel sorry for the hapless broncos and seeing Henjak's reactions of utter disbeleif in the coaches box.

This was their run from round 13 2009

R13. Melbourne 48 - 4 Loss
R14. Bulldogs 44 - 22 Loss
R15. Cronulla 46 - 12 Loss
R16. Parramatta 21 - 14 Loss
R17. Warriors 28 - 14 Win
R19. Souths 44 - 12 Loss
R20. Titans 34 - 18 Loss
R21. Raiders 56 - 0 Loss

Thats a horrific run even by Souths standards.

The Broncos went on to win their next 7 games inlcuding beating the minor premiers Dragons in the finals. They ended up losing to the cheats in the prelim final.

I dont remember what the Broncos injury situation was that year but that's a huge mid season turnaround. They were dead and burried after that loss to us. I realise the problems of this club probably go a lot deeper than the Broncos of that year but it still shows that no matter how hopeless a situation looks it can get better.

The problem is, that was one season where the Broncos did terribly. Raiders seem to be up and down since around early 2000's. No consistency from the Raiders for years and years.

As flattering as it is to see my club used as a source of inspiration I'm afraid to say I can't see many parallels.

Before the run, we were one of the best teams in the competition sitting on a 8-3 record with one of the best full strength line-ups in the competition. Once the rep. period hit though, it was utter mayhem. Henjak basically got rid of all our seasoned depth players and replaced them all with talented rookies who were a good year or three away from first grade. What resulted was one of the most disgusting periods in our club's proud history & eventually it lead to us missing our first final in 19 years or something crazy but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Basically, the boys regrouped and had the talent to beat anyone in the competition. Just look at that roster - Lockyer, Hodges, Hunt, Wallace, Folau, Taylor, Thaiday, Parker alongside young ins like Glenn, Yow Yeh, McCullough and unsung heroes like Sims, Kenny, Winterstein, Clinton etc. we could beat anyone on our day.

Unfortunately, the Dragons broke Wallace's ankle and we were left to play Tonie Carroll at halfback and got absolutely smashed by the cheats in a match we lost inside the first ten minutes. A shame, but then again I don't think our boys had the composure that year to win anyways. We really didn't have that Lazarus type player upfront to make those game changing yards.

Anyways lads, get your s**t sorted. Broncos/Raiders have an amazing rivalry there if your boys decide to aim up. Really, you guys should be the entertainers & inspiring those kids into making those highlight packages with terrible commercial radio songs. Instead, you're flattering the rest of the competition. Belt up!

To be honest, i don't see a turn around happening with this club. I think we can beat the Knights but we would need a fit Campeses to string a number of wins together.... Injuries will ultimately kill off any chance of a miracle finals appearance happening.

Your club needs to make some tough calls.

Sack Furner.

Move on TLL, Tilse, Harrison, Waddell, Berrigan, Buttriss, McCrone etc.

I'd even consider throwing Campese in that mix.

Plenty of good talent in the 20s & Mounties who can step up & should be streamlined to do so.

Anyways gents, best of luck tonight.

TLL, Tilse, Berrigan, McCrone hell no... The rest I wouldn't lose sleep over...

TLL & Tilse actually played well tonight, they just need to keep doing that for more than a month (which they did do in 2010).

McCrone has to get some of the mistakes out of his game but otherwise I still rate him highly and would like to see him as hooker in the future as well as he does play well there (see City V Country this year). For example you could go McIllwrick to start, McCrone to take over at the 25 minute mark or as a super utility, etc. Plus he works well as Campese's partner in the halves, it's just that Campo is never there anymore :(

They're not terrible players or anything, but they're holding your side back from being the best they can be.

TLL is old and just isn't delivering value for money.

Tilse hasn't delivered on his potential.

Berrigan is beyond past it.

McCrone is just plain ordinary. Do you honestly see him as a premiership winner?

Yeah unfortunately I only got to see the first 20 minutes but he was looking much like his old self in that period. Made more metres then any other forward on the park.
