A bit over the top don't you think? It is just and example he used. Why should they not be entitled to what every other professional sports star gets? Why doesn't the NRL come clean on the money thay make from the chips before we have a go at the bloke. Considering the circualtion of the footy cards in the paper @ $2 a pop for 16 units, I think there was a fair bit of money the NRl got there as well. Why wouldn't the players who sell the game to the public be allowed to gain from the extra cash their image earns?

Before you say I am just sticking up for Gaz because I am a fan, I can tell you I am not. Fantasic attacking centre he may be, but a very poor defender at times.

Money from cards>>>NRL>>>club distributions>>>players.
Can we have it twice please???

I'm with Gaz on this one.

The NRL continues to undersell the rights and images of its product ( and hence its players ) to companies such as Smiths.

As was highlighted earlier in the article link, the NRL " refused to disclose details of their contract ".

Why? Obviously because like many of their other contracts it was embarrasing.

Sure we can all throw our hands up in their air and say its greed, its this or that.

Rubbish.

$1,000 per player to use their images on a food product marketing campaign is laughable.

Do you think Brett Lee and the cricketers are getting $1,000 to be used in Weetbix boxes?

No.

I'm with Gaz, he is a world class footballer who deserves to be paid like one when his image is used to make money for big business. Do you think the chip company makes $1,000 per player out of the sales? They make waaaay more, and why shouldn't a player be rewarded for the earnings they bring to a company when its their image that is boosting sales anyway?

Sure, we'd all love a grand to be on a tazo in a chips bag. But then again none of us have the talent, profile, and money making pull of Mark Gasnier either -so lets all be a bit more realistic.

He gets $1000 for tazos and the game that pays him a good wage gets a bucket load of publicity. That's fair enough.

That was that close to the money (pardon the pun) that I thought it needed to be posted again. Those who want to have a crack at Gaz over this need to get rid of the chip (oops another) on their shoulders. The NRL may not have undersold the rights to their top players image, but they certainly have not paid out to the players involved accordingly. Nor have they put back into junior development because our junior club ( and most others) have gotten nothing from them. The real "Please Explain" should be directed to the NRL.

Since when should players in a professional sport all of a sudden become a charity for a sport they love?!

It sure as hell would be the only sport in the world where the players , their images , and profiles are expected to promote marketing campaigns for chip companies that make millions off their names in return for peanuts and I can't understand the attitude here of fans ... wow...

What good is any publicity if he isn't making decent money off of it?

That would be the same game that has limited his earning potential for the last 3 years, just so he stays under the salary cap? Meanwhile they have profited very well from him and have continued to do so without so much as an eyebrow raised. Doesn't that seem a little one sided to you?

Apparently the attitude of some fans here seems to think that a professional footballer who is getting paid $1,000 for the use of his image to market and promote the chips that Joe Bloggs who is earning $40,000 a year eats on his lunch break - is ok!

Some people here might want to compare what the chip company makes profit wise over the course of the promotion and line it up side by side to the $1,000 Gasnier is getting.

I know of kids who buy more of those chips just because a bloke like Mark Gasnier has a tazo inside the bloody things!

Its wrong of us to deny the players full earning potential for their images!

The company makes millions and millions! Gasnier gets thanked for boosting a large companies profits with a sh*tty grand?!

Give me a break.

That's right. But people seem to think, "hey, $1000 bucks just for my picture....SCORE!" That isn't how it works in business. SMiths do increase their profit when they offer those chips and it is only right that the stars on those cards be entitled to a fair % of that profit. $1000 is absolutely nothing compared to what SMiths make. They are either laughing all the way to the bank or the NRL is.

Just checking to see if Homer and Karma have finished their little love in so that the rest of us can continue to mock Gaz for being a prima dona.

Does anyone actually go out and buy chips in the hope they get a little round disc with Mark Gasnier's face on it? Fair dinkum!

Hmmm, you may be right, but let's see some figures so we can make an informed judgement rather than just taking your word for it.

Oh yeah, and The Chin is definitely a prima-donna.

I've too much time on my hands and just emailed Smiths.

I wish to make a complaint in regards to a packet of chips I consumed on the weekend. Upon opening a small sized silver package inside my chip packet, I was confronted with the hideous image of Mark Gasnier. This was rather disturbing and I would like to let you know I will not be buying any of your products until this ghastly image is removed from your chip packets.

He is only pointing out that the NRL is allowing the use of players for marketing without giving them anything. I think its fair enough.

Why should Smiths make a packet by using the players?

That's my question. How do we know they made a packet?

I'm not going to sit around all day looking for financial information just to appease you about how much money Smiths make each year

Though you might have heard of their parent company " PEPSI-CO " , you know a small little multi-national corporation ;-)

Why don't you go to www.smiths.com.au , read about them ( there's even a student section  ) , and then go do a quick search on Pepsi-Co at www.pepsico.com where there's a whole host of investor information for you to peruse your way throught...

Enjoy ;-)

You think they wouldn't do them if there wasn't a profit in them?

Kids love that sort of stuff, as soon as they find a packet with one surprise in it, they'll keep wanting more, it's just in most kids nature.

Dare I say, licensing the NRL would be a massive money spinner for Smiths in the male kids 5-12 age group.

Just thought I'd offer you the opportunity to back up your argument but no, you choose the sillymessenger approach. Bold proclamations and no evidence.

You might dare say that, you can dare say almost anything you want, but it doesn't necessarily make it true. Without figures to back up your claim, it's a moot point.

I feel sorry for Gasnier, the poor bastard had to leave the country just to earn a decent wage. Lucky he doesn't have any kids, he might been forced to take on a second job to keep them fed and clothed.
