Am I correct in suggesting Matt Gidley got one of the centres of the year?

I didn't hear this on the news, but heard it on the radio - he shared the honour with Nigel Vagana, or were the radio people telling porkies again?

If so then I question why? Gidley is a decent player, but I sometimes feel as though people over-rate him a bit. This may earn the wrath of all the Gidley fans, but I get the impression people think he is better than he sometimes is.

He has his moments, typically plays well in a lot of the big games like Country and Origin when selected - but often times people suggest he is the number-one centre in the country - I'm not sure I agree.

One thing I am sure of is that he is a quality player, someone who can produce big performances - perhaps though some people rate him higher than he probably deserves to be.

As for the other award - Buderus as Hooker of the Year was a surprise - I thought he certainly deserved the honour, but often times I find the footy show rate Wing higher. Both are exceptional players, and it was arguably the hardest decision - a good decision though.

Ricketson was always going to get in ahead of Kennedy - he just plays more games.

Yes Matt won Centre of the yr with Vagana.
The people voted for him so obviously there are alot of people out their who like how he plays... I was surprised that he won... but I think he is a work horse and even though may not always be at his best I think he had a pretty good season.

I had my doubts about Danny winning this yr too, but glad to see that he won and deservadly so.

I knew Ricko would win though... but I feel BK could have won as he is a fantastic player.

I thought the awards were fair enough
Fullback-"Sit your candyass down Minichello"- Wesser was a great choice
Wing-Fair enough
Centre- Vagana-fair enough But gidley honestly surprised
5/8-Sympathy for fittler -Preston turns more game
Half- fair enough
Lock-A joke- Ricketson offers little in attack and you can put in the cowboys lock and he could be a stand out{Morrison}If kennedy isnt the stand out then ive never seen football
2nd r0w- Good choice
Front -Fair enough
Hooker- BUderus was the stand out-Wing is a benchie and will always be as long as Danny wants the job
THE PEEPS HAVE SPOKEN- JOHNS-Its why we pay our money
AND THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT_PLAYER OF THE YEAR_"SIT YOUR CANDYASS DOWN FITTLER"- Gower- i can live with that

i thought the words were alright!

i totally agreed with fullback of the yr, hooker of the yr, 5/8 and half back- craig gower did deserve it. i don't feel ricko should have got it, maybe to have shared it with bk....but i suppose he has had a good yr, with origin and playing the test against new zealand.

You know....
I really think that sometimes he lives on reputation rather than what happens on the field.
sure he is a good player but during the grand final last year, the roosters were going nowhere until he copped a wack in the head by Villasante which i think stirred him out of his comfort zone.I guess its old age or playing smarter but he does very little between the 20 m lines
Thats why i call him " half a game Fittler" to a rooster friend of mine
Who also doesnt like being reminded of the last semi that johns played where they got spanked 40-6

I agree with what you've said about gidley. He can do some very good things out there. But IMO, he goes long periods without involvement. When Johns is out, that's when gidley steps up. But he's often very quiet.

I agree. When involved, Gidley seems to be a high-class centre - Australian representative material. But he does seem to have patches during the game, or even whole games, where he just doesn't get himself involved.

You'll notice that the rare times Gidley moves towards the centre of the field, and starts his weaving/stepping, he scores tries - he just has good footwork, yet we rarely see it because he finds himself in the centres.

I'm not suggesting that Matt Gidley should be moved from the centres, not at all, but many of the great centres (and indeed wingers) have the capacity and willingness to find more work down the centre of the field. You get in that sort of territory with a little bit of room to move, and suddenly you might find yourself being able to weave between two prop forwards.

Those little half-chances can win games, and fellows like Tahu, Gidley, MacDougall (until he left) and O'Davis, must get involved.
