PENRITH ANSWERS MEDIA REPORTS ON EARLY RELEASE OF PLAYERS

Jun 30 - Penrith will listen to proposals from any club interested in some of its high profile forwards, the club's General Manager of Rugby League, Michael Leary, said tonight.

He was commenting on media reports that the club wanted to offer an early release to players such as Ben Ross or Joe Galuvao at the end of this season.

"That's not the situation at all," Leary said. "We don't want to release anyone.

"However, the fact is we have a good crop of quality forwards and a shortage in the inside backs at the moment.

"Our results so far this year have shown that is our weak spot - and we have to do something about it before next season.

"With the salary cap as it is, we cannot afford to hold onto all our established forwards, shore up the contracts of some of our promising local juniors and go into the market place for a quality back.

"So we will listen to any proposal from any club that is interested in seeking an early release for some of our forwards.

"At this point nobody has approached us but the media reports are so strong that we felt the need to clear the air."

Thoughts? Ross has come on nicely in the past 2 years and we all know that Galavao is one of the most damaging 2nd rowers in the game when fit (which he has struggled with lately). If our management were to look at these 2, which would you prefer OR would you rather not touch them at all. The Tele suggests that Ross would be about $280,000 a year. With Rhino leaving, we could do with another prop that is for sure.

Ross is more than likely going to join Melbourne on a 350k deal and Gulavao seems well below his 2003 form and is getting a bit long in the tooth I believe. Whilst I agree we are in dire need of some muscle up front, I doubt either one of the Panthers players mentioned will end up in Canberra.

I would gladly take Ben Ross but IMO my major aim, albeit very hopeful, will be Stuart Fielden. He would be fantastic for us, and he has a top name :)

He won't come to Canberra anyway. We spend megabucks on hacks like T Smith so we have nothing left to offer players who can contribute and make a difference.

Gulavao would be a huge buy. Very dangerous close to the line, gives his team an additional attacking option inside the 20 (something we really really need). If he's playing below his 2003 form it's probably because he's been out with injury most of the year. I think we might be right for front rowers next year.

We need one front rower and a strike centre to be a force.

I disagree. I think we need a front rower and a back rower. We have plenty of outside backs like Chalk, Milne, Graham, Ale, Howell, Frawley, Mogg.

Besides Milne and Ale who are a couple of years off anyway, none of our backs will ever be rep players. We need someone in our backline like a Tahu etc

Chalk and Graham? Both are very taleted players.

Gulovau is over-rated IMO. Players like Campbell and Gower make him look better then he is.
