Tigers defend home ground allocation

Given the riff-raff about Telstra I suppose this is of general interest to all RL fans...

CLUB DEFENDS HOME GAMES ALLOCATION

The increasing popularity of the Wests Tigers and their constant ability to attract large crowds has seen the club defend its decision to play four matches at Telstra Stadium next season.

Wests Tigers has extended its deal with Telstra Stadium by agreeing to play four home matches in 2008 after the current deal finished this season. Wests Tigers played five home games at Telstra Stadium this year.

Traditional home grounds Campbelltown Stadium and Leichhardt Oval will again host three matches.

To celebrate the centenary of rugby league, Wests Tigers will play two blockbuster home games at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. Wests Tigers is the only NRL club to play home games at the SCG next season.

Wests Tigers CEO Steve Noyce said the Telstra Stadium deal was for next season only at this stage.

“We need a stadium that can accommodate larger crowds and provide comfortable and modern facilities for not only our supporters but also our growing base of corporate clients,’’ Noyce said.

“It is extremely important for us to play home games in our traditional heartlands of Campbelltown and Leichhardt.

“Wests Tigers is working hard with Campbelltown Council to get the Federal Government funding required to further upgrade Campbelltown Stadium. We are also seeking additional funding to make further upgrades to Leichhardt Oval.’’

Research conducted by the NRL on behalf of Wests Tigers revealed a high percentage of supporters enjoyed Telstra Stadium.

Increased parking facilities, easy transport to and from the ground, comfortable seating, corporate opportunities to the atmosphere at the ground were some of the reasons why fans like Telstra Stadium.

Noyce said figures show Wests Tigers can now lay claim to having the best crowd attendances in NSW.

“Wests Tigers were the best Sydney club for crowd attendances last year,’’ Noyce said.

“This season we passed Newcastle to now have the best attendances in NSW.

“Two of our home games at Telstra Stadium this season attracted more than 22,000 (Parramatta) and 25,000 (Roosters) supporters.

“These matches were played on a Monday and Friday night respectively and were shown live on television, yet our supporters still came out in big numbers.’’

The two games next year at SCG (correct me if I am wrong) is Round 1 VS Dragons and Rund 6 Vs Souths.

Yet theyre down on the previous year.

“Two of our home games at Telstra Stadium this season attracted more than 22,000 (Parramatta) and 25,000 (Roosters) supporters.
We lost both games, doesntseem to come into calculations though.
The other three got 13k, 12k, 13k.

I ask anyone have they seen this 'research'?

A poll on the official forum tells a different story

Different question to the quote you're getting your panties in a twist over.

The suggestion from Noyce is that a large percentage of fans actually enjoy it... nowhere does it say they enjoy it MORE than the other two.

Oh, and you're deadset clutching at straws if you're going to whinge about losing in front of a big crowd.

Was probably conducted upstairs just on completion of dessert and before the coffee.

Yes [ 10 ] [14.49%]
No [ 48 ] [69.57%]
Fence-Sitter [ 11 ] [15.94%]

An interwebs poll is hardly a correct reflection of a clubs supporter base however.

Not that I'm going either way. It's just your internet support is typically the hard core.

ask all those people that could not get a ticket to the Tigers v Souths game because it was played at Leichardt instead of Telstra

I guess a survey among the corporate set in their velvet high backed seats isnt either, but thats where these quoted opinions seems to come from.

Atmosphere?!?! Rarely.

Its reflective though of opinions at games, at post match pressos, at club functions, fan days, fan to fan chat over a 3 year period.....its always been approx those figures.

I'd first ask them why they didnt get a ticket during the three weeks they were on sale for.

I hardly see the average joe in GA enthusing about the corporate availability he's never going to use.

Makes sense to me the only people raving about corporate facilities would be those actually using them.

Marketing can swing anything to make it look how they want it too...

Telstra isnt as bad as alot of league fans make out. Sure when it used to hold 100 or even 90 thousand with the track around it, it was sh*thouse but with the new configurations its not bad at all. You do get atmosphere if your in an area that is full.

last year we had a good record but struggled to get people past the gates and sunday afternoon with the 2.30pm kick off wasnt helping either...

this year got even worse... i hope things do change for next season or the dogs will continuely see dismal attendence to our home games

What fans want is a winning football team and if every second week we are giving our home game advantage away it makes winning games that much harder. In 2007 with many games going down to the wire, you need all the advantage you can get and 2008 will not be much different. Now if we had a team like the storm it would not be such an issue, but with our playing roster we need all the help we can get

Thats right whoring our homes games over so many different venues only waters down how effective our home ground advantage can be, we would be more effective imo if we just stuck to the main two. (cambo and LO)
