Given the riff-raff about Telstra I suppose this is of general interest to all RL fans...
CLUB DEFENDS HOME GAMES ALLOCATION
The increasing popularity of the Wests Tigers and their constant ability to attract large crowds has seen the club defend its decision to play four matches at Telstra Stadium next season.
Wests Tigers has extended its deal with Telstra Stadium by agreeing to play four home matches in 2008 after the current deal finished this season. Wests Tigers played five home games at Telstra Stadium this year.
Traditional home grounds Campbelltown Stadium and Leichhardt Oval will again host three matches.
To celebrate the centenary of rugby league, Wests Tigers will play two blockbuster home games at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. Wests Tigers is the only NRL club to play home games at the SCG next season.
Wests Tigers CEO Steve Noyce said the Telstra Stadium deal was for next season only at this stage.
“We need a stadium that can accommodate larger crowds and provide comfortable and modern facilities for not only our supporters but also our growing base of corporate clients,’’ Noyce said.
“It is extremely important for us to play home games in our traditional heartlands of Campbelltown and Leichhardt.
“Wests Tigers is working hard with Campbelltown Council to get the Federal Government funding required to further upgrade Campbelltown Stadium. We are also seeking additional funding to make further upgrades to Leichhardt Oval.’’
Research conducted by the NRL on behalf of Wests Tigers revealed a high percentage of supporters enjoyed Telstra Stadium.
Increased parking facilities, easy transport to and from the ground, comfortable seating, corporate opportunities to the atmosphere at the ground were some of the reasons why fans like Telstra Stadium.
Noyce said figures show Wests Tigers can now lay claim to having the best crowd attendances in NSW.
“Wests Tigers were the best Sydney club for crowd attendances last year,’’ Noyce said.
“This season we passed Newcastle to now have the best attendances in NSW.
“Two of our home games at Telstra Stadium this season attracted more than 22,000 (Parramatta) and 25,000 (Roosters) supporters.
“These matches were played on a Monday and Friday night respectively and were shown live on television, yet our supporters still came out in big numbers.’’
