Time for Knights prop to stand up and be counted
BY ROBERT DILLON

THE moment of truth has arrived for Danny Wicks.

After 15 games in the blue and red, the Knights desperately need the former St George Illawarra giant to put his best foot forward in Friday night's crucial showdown with Penrith at CUA Stadium.

Trailing the eighth-placed Panthers by three points, Newcastle's season is effectively on the line.

A loss could leave them five points adrift of the top eight and praying for a miracle in their remaining eight games.

For the Knights to have any chance of upsetting the in-form Panthers, the big men in their pack need to contain human steamrollers Petero Civoniceva and Tony Puletua.

If Newcastle are outmuscled up front, then the Panthers could well blow them away with pace out wide.

Newcastle's engine room is well below full capacity.

NSW Origin enforcer Ben Cross and Jesse Royal will be sidelined for several weeks through injury, and veteran Mitchell Sargent was released last month to play in England.

In their absence, Knights coach Brian Smith yesterday named Dan Tolar and Mark Taufua as his starting front-rowers.

Tolar has been playing wounded and needs painkilling injections in his ribs to get on the field each week.

Taufua has only three NRL appearances to his credit and has not been sighted in the top grade this season.

The onus is on Wicks, one of Newcastle's main off-season signings, to start making an impact, as he did in the early rounds.

The 22-year-old's statistics over the past seven or eight games suggest his form has tapered off.

Last week against St George Illawarra he made only four hit-ups and 16 tackles in 36 minutes on the field. Worse still, he missed six tackles, and over the course of the season has missed 41 more than any other Newcastle player.

It was interesting to note that, after last week's game, St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown said the Knights were "getting good value" out of former Dragons Chris Houston and Wes Naiqama. Brown made no mention of Wicks. Maybe that was just an oversight, or maybe it was not.

There is little doubt that Wicks has the raw ingredients size and speed to become a dominant figure in the NRL.

And front-rowers, admittedly, invariably take time to mature.

But time is a luxury the Knights cannot afford.

Friday night, at CUA Stadium, is the ideal time and place for Wicks to start repaying the faith that coach Smith has invested in him.

I cant honestly even comprehend how he made it to reserves let alone first grade in the NRL. His form suggests he plays for some bottom of the table 6th grade side.

Burger King must have felt horror when Perry left, but Wicks has meant they've needed to bring in extra staff

It is meant to be "41, more than any other Knights player".

Houston has missed 37, and Mullen 36, Paterson 34, and so on.

But looking at the stats, all the players who have missed more than 30 tackles this season average over 60 minutes except for Zeb Taia (52 mins a game - 31 tackles missed) and Danny Wicks (35 mins a game, 41 missed). Very bad...

That makes more sense.

Still, 41 missed with an average of 35min per game is attrocious. I wonder if Smithy will blame the halves for mot helping Wicksy in defence as well

Top 5 missed tacklers for the Knights:

Wicks - 230 made 41 missed
Houston - 433 made 36 missed
Mullen - 222 made 34 missed
Buderus - 338 made 33 missed (surprising)
Paterson - 300 made 32 missed

He made 26 tackles in Round 8 against the Gold Coast (He started that match) and then he made 22 Tackles in Round 12 against Warriors off the bench.

Bedsy misses alot of thos tackles when his diving from the other side of the field and swings off them. I wouldn't pay much attention to his, because more often than not they slow the man down in time for the 2nd and 3rd man to get him, he just falls off.

What that stat does not show is how many tackles he is second or third man in.

Royal, Tolar, Simmo and even Rich have great percentages in this stat.

Wicks is the worst in the Club.

So not only are his defence numbers poor, he is not even making first contact.

This is even more staggering considering teams target Wicks in defence.

How Wicks can do so few tackles when teams direct traffic at him is incredible.

I can forgive Mullen, he is considered our best play maker, he will get massive traffic, and his figures are pretty good considering.

Thank god we're getting rid of Bedsy. He's just not up to it anymore :sarcasm:

Wicks is a favourite of smiths off the field, I bet that is why he hasn't been dropped! It would be better for the team if wicks was dropped and we only played with 16 men!

BIHK can you say something about how Wicks hasn't had a significant injury in his career? Please? :sarcasm:

I was having a look at how many games wicks has played in so far this year, he looks like he hasn't had a serious injury in ages! Same with ciraldo!

Knowing our luck...Doogs will strain an eyelash and be ruled out, not Wicks and/or Ciraldo
