Todd Carney promises to get off booze in 2009 if Canberra let him play

I'm going to stir things up a bit.

Isn't this a great opportunity to pickup a quality player for a pittance? As I recall Canberra were asking for special dispensation from the NRL to pick up a halfback at the end of last year, after Herbert was injured - the raiders ran out of depth.

Suppose you agreed to take Todd Carney back at minimum wage, but told him he'd have to swear off the piss for the ENTIRE contract and would be playing park footy for the first year.

Get him off the grog and into some counselling and give him the opportunity to play, just not straight away.

I agree he's an idiot, and had too much success too early in life. I agree he's had more than enough chances and has blown them all - but from a football point of view, this WILL come back to bite you if he signs with a rival NRL club for the 2010 season.

If you pay him nothing and keep him playing park footy for a year, whilst getting help, you can retain a top talent AND still send the message that you're serious about stopping the drinking culture.

Thoughts?

Todd Carney is a pretty dumb kid (lets face it he is) who is very poorly by his manager who has resorted to publicly begging he is given another chance.

What a great combination they make. I think the best thing he can do is cut lose his manager, sort himself out and come back in 2010 with a clear head and clean slate.

Too much water under the bridge, too much atomicity between player and club, not to mention the rumours are some factions of the board dont even want to contemplate the possible return of Carney to this club, and some of the player group are not pleased he choose the bottle over them... and thats not even considering the atomicity a bloke like Carney would have for a club who had the audacity to sack him

his time with the raiders is done

For the record he was seen driving like a loon in Goulburn last week. Wasn't his licence suspended as well? Dead-set this guy needs a wake-up. In a small town where you can be easily recognised he is DRIVING a car and driving it in a manner that is going to cause attention.

Why would Carney agree to that if it still means he cant play in season 2009? Isnt that what he's begging to do?

If he isnt going to play NRL in 2009 anyway then theres nothing to stop him signing a better contract in 2010 for a rival team who wont make him give up the booze.

Yeah, but his dad died, so he can do whatever he wants. ;-)

I don't think he understands that he can actually go to jail if he gets busted. I'm glad our club has cut him loose but you really have to worry about the guy and the people he could potentially hurt along the way.

And good luck to whoever that is. Journos will be looking out for him like a hawk.

I love the Monday mornings idle chit chat around the water cooler after they have had a good hard dose of Crap over the weekend..they wait till i have left and then i hear them start with sh*te like did you hear Joe blo from that RL team was found asleep in his backyard or some sh*te.

They Know not to dribble assinine crap in my presence..

If he was willing to sign for say 40k or so and was told he was coming in as third or fourth choice halfback and would have to work his way back in Queensland and had a contract that explicitly said he would be terminated if he so much as looked at trouble... I don't really see the harm.

We need to face facts that Herbert is injury prone and we don't have a lot of cover at 5/8th if Campese went down. Carney can play both halfback and 5/8th. He would be very handy to have in case of injury.

EDIT

I also wouldn't be opposed to mandating him to work or get his HSC at TAFE or something while he isn't playing NRL first grade.
