Its pretty clear News got their wish here but the worst part is that, judging by Facebook posts, the general public have bought the News Ltd line . Which astounds me tbh.
Smith achieved a massive amount in terms of bringing professionalism to head office. What "rugby league person" could achieve what he has?

David Smith was good. His stand to get rugby league on as many free to air games platform was significant and showed a lot of ticker! A recent statement of his which had a vision of two additional clubs being in the NRL within a decade was also the most positive statement for the game in recent memory.

A good administrator.

Their needs to be a thorough cleanout of the leagues within NSW especially Country rugby league as they are being run by inept people in the main with no vision or feeling for the game and what its public and players want.

The Newcastle rugby league is one relevant example of a very disjointed and poorly planned body. I'm sure theirs more but Newcastle RL is on the nose and needs fixing quick! Teams are dropping like flies (once an 11 team comp now 8 teams, poor grand final attendance and publicity, lack of understanding of working with other leagues(2nd Div.) in the area etc!)A lack of RL presence , proactiveness and funding in junior recruiting and development is a pointer to a very poorly run organization. There's more but I'll leave that up to the overseeing body to work it out.

Dave Smith was the scalp Rupert Murdoch wanted

In the end, rugby league did to Dave Smith what the British Army and international banking could not: exhaust his will with its brutality and force his resignation as chief executive of the NRL.
The game does that to you. It is relentless, ruthless and remorseless. After three years in the job Smith simply could not do another 12 months.
Smith's critics, particularly those at News Corporation, will boast that Rupert Murdoch got his scalp, only two months after Smith had negotiated a $925m free-to-air TV deal with Channel Nine, cutting Fox Sports out of Saturday and Monday nights NRL programming.
Murdoch did seek a head on a plate. He could not sack one of his own because that would be conceding Fox Sports had not kept its eye on the secret negotiations over TV rights taking place with Nine at a Sydney eastern suburbs hotel.
Rupert's response was to pay at least $300m more for AFL rights, believing the NRL could never get close to the $2.5b over six year deal he secured for his latest sporting love.
The fury of News' top executives was compounded when Smith and ARL Commission chair John Grant accepted a prior invitation to attend a lunch at Catalinas restaurant, hosted by Murdoch.
Rupert's lieutenants suggested Smith and Grant be seated "near the shit house", appalled that Smith would inform Fox of the Nine deal only hours before the Stock Exchange was notified.
But Smith was merely acting on the commands of key commissioners to separate the free-to-air and pay TV deals, rather than continue the Nine/Fox Sports alliance.
OK, anyone who had lived through the Super League war, which Smith had not, knows you don't piss off a man who, as former News boss John Hartigan once said, buys ink by the thousand litre barrel.
Nor did Smith have to execute the Nine deal more than two years ahead of the current contract expiring.
But he has allowed ample time for the Fox Sports and NRL executives to return to the negotiating table.
It just won't be with him. His resignation acts as what media rights consultant, Colin Smith, calls "a circuit breaker" for the stalled negotiations on the four NRL games per week yet to be sold to either pay TV or the big internet providers, such as Netflix.
The NRL club bosses circling the administration will want at least another billion dollars and Dave Smith is confident this is achievable.
He told a friend recently that the total package will be commensurate with the AFL's, even allowing for Rupert paying overs in "jilted love affair money."

So what is Smith's legacy? Significant growth in the value of broadcast rights. Billions secured in investment for Rugby League stadiums. Record club membership. New football pathways for recreational, female and elite players along with partnership with Touch football. Massive growth in digital profile and reach. Higher funding for clubs, states and grassroots than ever before. Improved response to poor player behaviour. Safer sport (shoulder charge, spear tackle, no punching.). Four clubs saved from administration and restructured.
His handling of the Cronulla supplements saga was also far superior to the AFL's approach to Essendon, with 34 AFL players yet to have their futures determined.
When Smith debated AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan at a business breakfast in Melbourne in March, it was clear to neutral observers that the NRL guy won.
He was assured, confident, measured, yet passionate about a game he was yet to learn never loves you back with same ardour you give it.
Smith can't be accorded the code's highest honour, which is a survivor, in the sense that Wayne Bennett, Phil Gould and Roosters boss Nick Politis are survivors.
Sure, there are others at the coal face who have made rugby league their life-long career but these "have clip board, will travel" assistant coaches are spared the inexorable and incessant spotlight of the critics.
Nor are they exposed to the merciless carping on the fan's new platform, social media.
Smith appeared impervious to criticism, telling colleagues under siege "don't let them get you down" but the workload took its leaden toll.
Those who recall he did not know the name of the Australian captain when he took the job should remember it was players like Cameron Smith he cared for when he upset Fox Sports by taking the unpopular Monday night games out of the next TV rights deal.
He may have gone to the Rugby World Cup to watch Wales play but when he vacates his office at NRL Central, it will be as a leaguie.

Newcastle has its issues but how is 7.5k on its GF day a poor attendance?

Whoever the replacement is I think they need

*Hard skills in commerce, economics or both;
*A good understanding of the media (either as a practitioner or having worked as a spokesperson);
*To be well connected;
*Under 60;
*A strong communicator both internally and externally (they need a presence);
*A demonstrated ability to push back against the powerful when necessary.

I actually think it's a benefit if they come from outside league too (no baggage). To be honest the first name that popped into my head was Glenn Stevens (RBA governor) but I'm not sure how others would view that. Certainly satisfies the criteria above.

7,500 a good attendance!?
Their are issues aren't there!

From recent memory and not that long ago 15,000 and 16,000 was standard. I know I played in front of 16,000 in 1994. If you think 7,500 is good then we are settling for mediocrity and a poor look for the game.

On the day the weather was good but a lack of signage outside the "new" venue was disturbing and almost invited a poor attendance. The week's weather leading into the game was wet but still doesn't mean a sign could not have been planned to let the thousands of cars that travel past Hunter stadium know that a GF was on! Very poor marketing which ultimately must go to administrative incompetence.

And you'd be crazy or very very myopic to think that AFL has not grown significantly in those 15 years across the country. NRL has grown as well in that time and is more than holding its own in its strongholds but growth in other areas is questionable if it is matching. Take a look at numbers for the VicNRL against numbers for AFL in NSW. With the games new money in the last deal we are starting to readdress this but don't think for a minute having more resources than your competitor isn't important in this battle.

And yet rugby league keeps growing. We've added thousands in terms of participation with the takeover of touch alone (which before anyone starts is clearly based on rl and so is a legimate number to use as participation) and we've had instances where the top tv programs are rl games. Regardless of whether the afl is growing too, our game has never been in ruder financial health. You might not like all the decisions being made, but surely this in indisputable.
I also wonder how many of those who have begun playing Aussie rules in our heartland have come from rugby rather than rl. I have nothing definitive to back up that claim but there is no doubt that part of the afl s appeal is its apparent respectability which ties in with ru. Combine this with the decline rugby has been on in the last five or six years and there might be something in it.

If you think the Newcastle grand final will ever get 15k again you must have taken too many knocks in 1994. It has absolutely nothing to do with the CRL anyway. Why the f**k would it? If the NRL gave even a fraction of a f**k about grassroots football outside Sydney it could have used its ridiculous resources to help out. Did they? No need to answer.

Jeez, you pulled a few from left field with that rant.

I think you will find Sydney always had a very strong city comp (North Shore, Newtown, Western Suburbs etc) until the Swans arrived playing in the elite AFL comp, this basically kill the local semi-pro comp as fans started focusing on the Swans. It is probably below where it was before South Melbourne arrived.

This probably follows on to the post/s on the Newcastle comp, the Knights have wore it down over time.

Let's hope we don't have someone with your negative outlook in rugby league administration. Less than a decade a ago a Newcastle grand final drew about 18,000. So you think our code can't achieve this result again? I think so!

I concede that the money isn't being applied or finding its way anywhere near the grass roots level and yes this is the grass roots level.

I'm still astounded the local junior registration person works in a dilapidated shanty like office of another firm and does her time consuming job on the scent of an oily rag!

Their seems to be administrative incompetence and poorly targeted spending all-round.
It's not a good picture.

Brilliant way to maximise your organisation's income eh?

You are just a flaming idiot.
So you think Smith should have dropped his pants, bent over & let Uncle Rupert go in dry .
Just like he did for yrs to Gallop .

I would rather a CEO with balls than one eho drops to their knees when news ltd says so .

I can guarantee a large flow of kids who once played basketball have flowed into AFL in QLD. Played both league and basketball and when basketball commercially died in the 90's AFL stepped in.

Possibly but do you have proof of this or is this just your opinion. Can see kids with the same body shape going from basketball to AFL but can't imagine a kid brought up with the rough and tumble of League enjoying the non contact in AFL.
