For the good of the game it has to be an ex player with good business acumen , and a cleanskin or someone like Wayne Bennett who knows and wants what's best for the game.
If Greenberg gets it the game is gorrne.

Next CEO should be someone in a similar vein to Smith, a successful and intelligent businessman from outside of the game without the baggage. People we say we need a 'rugby league person', but i think that kind of person needs to be in the 'head of football' role that Todd Greenberg currently occupies. I think to many people have confused Greenbergs work as dave smith's. Smith has been successful at what he was brought in to achieve, but the one area that has let him down has been his appointment of Greenberg as the head of football

People saying we need a 'rugby league person' as the next ceo. Some suggestions are guys like Phil Gould or Wayne Bennett.
Are Gould and Bennett the kind of people you want as ceo to
- negotiate with media companies on TV rights .
- negotiate with Rupert Murdoch and his battle hardened team of lawyers
- work with federal and state governments on stadium deals, and on deals for rugby league's big events (GFs, SOO, internationals, 9s etc)
- work on bringing all the different arms of rugby league together to work harmoniously ( state leagues, bush leagues, touch, womens league, international league etc)
- work with the 16 clubs to help get them running efficiently, to decide on club grants that strike the balance of funding clubs without making clubs reliant
-work in strategies to build members and fan bases
- oversea all the departments of the nrl look football operations or the games strategic expansion division.
- work with big multi-national companies on partnerships, investments or sponsorships to grow the game

Or do we want these 'rugby league people' like Benett and Gould to take Greenbergs role as head of football so they can work on things like
- the actual game on the field, the rules and how to make it better / more attractive
- work with the refs and try and fix what is a broken system.
- work on improving the judiciary system
- work on players welfare and rights.
- consult with the coaches

Really hope we keep the four games on FTA TV, that is a win for the fans and as David Smith said not one fan complained about that.

I can't see why Foxtel can't do a deal like they did in the AFL and simulcast some or all of the FTA TV.

I also think their may be other players for the pay TV rights. BEIN sports have been buying a lot of soccer rights in this country and are going after the EPL rights from Foxtel. they could make even bigger inroads if they were to add NRL as well.

My honest belief is that Fox will be the only viable Pay TV bidder. No matter what you think of Rupert, we need him to stump up close to a billion big ones.

Nice post. We do need a business person first and foremost. A love for league wouldn't go astray either.

I thought Gus could do it as people do listen to him, commands respect by many in the game and he knows the game like nobody else. Looking at your criteria however, I think Murdoch and Gus probably couldn't/wouldn't work together.

That's exactly right for now and the next few years. But the issue facing Fox is online streaming sites such as Netflix.

Now, the danger for Fox isn't so much that Netflix or Google will take the NRL rights, it's that they're taking everything else not sport related. If Fox lost its top 10 TV shows that aren't sport content, suddenly sport is the only thing they have and it becomes even more important than before. That's the value of sports rights. And it just so happens that the NRL is their number one sporting program and responsible for most of their subscribers.

The NRL is worth more to Fox than any other pay TV or streaming service. So Fox will need to pay market rates if they want to maintain status quo for as long as possible or the NRL will take less money to with the (short term) weaker competitor.

I totally agree...

The primary requirement should be a career based on the ability to simulate a carcrash with you head and body.

Let's be honest; we dont want a qualified person in the seat when we could have a brain damaged jock. I say, the more intellectually handy-capped the better!!!!!

Hiring someone from business is fine but can we get someone with some understanding about the Australian sporting culture? It doest have to be a league person in fact its better if it is not but someone with some knowledge of RL and the challenges it faces would be good imo. Not some rugby loving knob who just wants to please the media.

Id only consider him for a spot on the Commission (with 7 people around him to temper his more ridiculous ideas). People listen to him and I wouldnt mind having him on the inside of the tent pissing out.

Anywhere else though, he'd probably f*ck it up badly.

I think the need for other Pay opporators (in the short term) is overstated...

The ARLC could just sell all 8 games to 9 and give nothing to FOX. the NRL would gain massively in exposure and FOX would feel the full weight of their lose.

People seem to think that the ARLC needs another bidder that could match FOXs price; this isnt true. The ARLC knows their $value to FOX and they can say "give us $X or we go to 9 for less money but more exposure"

Can't help but think that despite Dave Smiths best efforts to bring control back to those running our game and away from those wanting the "best" deal for TV rights and coverage.

Whilst he may not have been from a league background he put the game in a decent financial position by selling the product for what he thinks it was worth. Club heads get pissy, news limited get stroppy and the old boys club revoke his membership. I think pushing him out was a bad idea. We needed a stronger head of football to support the guy up the top making all of the money decisions.

I'm sure I am not the only one who actually appreciated the work he did in such a short time. Now focus should be on fixing the game itself which is where someone like Gould could make a difference
