The timing of Lyon's departure is really annoying. If it was announced about 8 months earlier, then Tonga should have been scoring a hat-trick for the blue and golds, not the blue and whites.

we never really agev him much of a chance.

he could have been slotted into our first grade team at wing or even fullback, if Freshie and Lyon were still around.

the els decision makes decieded he could only play centre so he would stay in premmy league.

good decision lads

he ripped it up didn't he :(

he made hodges look like this

i wonder if hodges will get suspended for that high tackle. wouldn't it be funny if tonga took his place - ultimate humiliation

He did play a game or two on the wing for Parramatta I thought. Tonga's first grade form was not that great here, he was offered an incentive contract where he'd get quite a good pay-packet if he earned himself a first grade spot. He decided he wouldn't get much of a chance behind Lyon and Vaealiki, and we can't blame him, can't really blame the club either.

Then why is it that he can play so well for the Dogs and not the Eels ?

He is realising his potential after holding onto a first grade spot, something he couldn't do, and wasn't given a chance to at Parramatta. When negotiations were taking place, Canterbury needed a centre for this yr, Parra didn't.

You hit the nail on the head.

"he wasn't given a chance at Parramatta"

Thats what I've been saying.

Another good decision by our decision maker

Tonga is a confidence player, hence the reason he didn't really perform well for us in first grade last year. The major problem at our club for the past 2 years is that for whatever reason the players have no confidence in themselves. We need a good motivator.

why the hell would he have been given a chance behind Vaealiki and Lyon?

tonga wasnt exactly playing like he is now when he was at the eels. he was always a class act, but definitely no vaealiki.

Vaealiki is no Tonga, Tonga shits all over him, he was hardly given game time at the eels even when he did play good #-o

From memory he was given a chance last year in the centres against the Raiders and he had an absolute shocker missing tackles left right and centre. His confidence went rigth down and he never played first grade for us again. Now his confidence is up and he's in scintillating form.

Like I said, we have a problem at our club with motivation & confidence and obviously the coaching staff have alot to answer for in this department.

Its that type of thinking that probably caused him to leave.

If you read back a few posts you will see that I said he could have been played on the wing or even fullback.

Fair enough, but Vaealiki is an international player, at his potential best he would is one of the best centres in the game. He's been down on form the past couple of years but it doesn't make sense to get rid of a test centre and replace him with a guy who's played only a bit of first grade.

why would we have kept an out of form (read:low on confidance) centre with the hope of him playing an out of position winger or fullback later on? really.

hindsights a bitch i know, but dont look for someone to blame all the time. just accept that not everything always goes in your favour.

They didn't get rid of him they were off-contract. I'm sure Tonga would be behind in the pecking order if Vagana were still at the club.
