Tongue set to smash NRL tackling record

According to raiders.com. Alan Tongue has made 947 tackles this season, only 58 short of Richard Swain's record of 1005 from season 2001.

Last week he made 59 tackles against the Tigers with 100% effectiveness... incredible. At his current average he will pass Swain early in Rd 26 (the Raiders only have two matches left and a bye), with the new mark being around 1050! Well done Tonguey, a tireless worker who has become a real inspiration at the Raiders

Awesome stats, one of the most underated players in the nrl.

Beast of a player, bleeds green, what a champion!

I think I read somewhere his lowest tackle count of the year was like 37... that in itself is unbelievable!

From memory he carried an injury into that match.

He's become a real leader at the club and I expect to see the (c) next to his name next year.

He fired up the boys at the start of golden point last week, barking instructions to them all... he wears his heart on his sleeve and is a real crowd favourite. Great example of application over talent - he's not the most gifted of players but he works his arse off and the improvement in his game has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Incredible work load, he has to be a walk up for city vs country next year, he really should have been this year to be honest. He seems a really likeable guy and a very modest bloke too.

He is a top bloke. I remember meeting him in his debut year and he was so excited to have someone wanting a photo with him.

Onya Tonguey!

I disagree...I think hes very very gifted, maybe not in the mould of a Marshall or inglis, but theres not much he cant do.

We all know he can tackle, hes got quite a wicked, effective step...a very good running game with good leg drive, seem to pass OK - actually throws a pretty good long right handed pass from memory...and has a neat kicking game where I seem to remember him scoring a try off his own kick and then another kick after that not too distantly ago.

That's quite true. Everyone assumes that he has no skills because they look at him and think of him as just a worker. But its no fluke that he has also scored 8 tries this year.

you'd think he'd be a fair shot at dally m lock of the year.. but there's ben kennedy there, i spose the storm dude aswell, and who else in with a chance? really?

i hope tonguey can grab it cause i'd like to see him recognised not just as a little man who never gives up, but as the gifted and talented footballer that he is.

No way will he get lock of the year. There are a few. Kennedy will get it for sure as it goes on Dally M points and he is right up the top. Johnson is a chance, gallen from the sharks, and SBW would be before Tongue.

well thats what i was asking for wasnt it? so thankyou.. i knew it went off dally m points.

and i doubt that SBW would be higher than tonguey.

it kinda sucks that the points in each match are just decided by one dickhead who is in the telegraph or on fox sports.. because i think that alot of the time it is the old favourites that get the points. or someone who has scored 2 trys and done nothing else.

Even if it wasn't off Dally M points those players would be picked before Tongue. A tackling record is great BUT a ball playing lock is more dangerous, ala Kennedy, SBW.

Kennedy is a special for Dally M lock of the year.

I'm a fan of the Tongue-lasher. Done a remarkable job for the Raiders this year and has also scored a few good tries (what a team effort it was against the Tigers with Tongue finishing off - brilliant).
