Tonight's Team of the Century

I still can't believe Stuart wasn't in the top 100.

But anyway, I won't hazard a guess at the team except:

Mal Meninga would have smashed any of those old codgers they come with in the outside backs.

And for that matter so would have the Guru.

Should be an interesting team. BUT I won't be staying up to watch it. I wish the ABC would cover the footy again.

Does anyone think a PARRA MAN will make the team?

I lost interest when it was suggested that Steve Walters would be rake.

Steve Walters the best hooker ever ? :?

I find it almost impossible to have any sensible input into a team of the century cos all I know of is footy since about 1980

Agree. I reckon that the only person qualified of providing such an opinion was Frank Hyde.

I feel the same Strides, but you just know that there are certain people that will make, like Gasnier and Raper, even though we didn't see them play.

Wally Lewis is a near certainty at 5/8. Sorry Mr Kenny.
Alf or Joey for Half. They are about the only positions that are straight forward.

They should have named two teams. One for the first 50 years, one for the second 50.
Whatever team they name, there will be a huge up roar.

Gasnier is a shoe in for one centre - Reg that is, not the other clown, and Raper will almost certainly be lock, and Churchill fullback. Other than that....??

For what it's worth, here's my team......

1 Clive Churchill (C)

2 Ken Irvine

3 Reg Gasnier

4 Dave Brown

5 Eric Grothe

6 Wally Lewis

7 Andrew Johns

8 Arthur Beetson

9 Ken Kearney

10 Duncan Hall

11 Norm Provan

12 Daniel Wagon

13 John Raper

14 Bradley Clyde

15 Dally Messenger

16 Bob Fulton

17 Ray Price

Coaches

1. Jack Gibson

2. Cranky Pants.

I have a real problem with Wally Lewis being in that side. Great player but greatest of all time???? Bert outplayed him plenty of times and he had very little impact when he played week in week out in this comp.

Only proved himself in rep footy and that is not enough in my opinion !

I think everyone can agree that State Of Origin is the toughest rugby league and the way Wally Lewis dominated it, has got to be worth something. Is it obvious that I am a Queenslander? lol

I'd agree with that wholeheartedly. Media made myth much like his possible halfback partner. ;-)

Billy Smith and Bob Fulton for the halves and Lewis shouldn't get a look in. The bloke was a lock not a 5/8 and Raper leaves him for dead.

Steve Walters. I cannot agree on. I actually thought that Benny Elias outplayed him a number of times and in my view was the best hooker that I have ever seen. Mal Meninga would have been able to put Dave Brown in his teeth while on his way to the tryline.

Ray Price should also be there somewhere.

Love to ask if any of the judges actually saw Dally Messenger play or even saw tape of him.

To be honest his name was hardly mentioned as a great when I was growing up. Then News Ltd decided to put on an awards night and their main paper at the time was the Daily Mirror. They then came up with the Awards name of Dally M awards. I've always wondered if this player was glorified beyond his ability by News Ltd because of his name which conveniently fitted their marketing agenda.

Am I barking up the wrong tree ?

Bert outplayed Wally plenty of times. When they were picked in the Kangaroo squad Kenny was the 5/8.

Bozo Fulton deserves similar accolades. He would dominate whoever is named in his place. In defence, in attack, in every department.

From all accounts - No. There are players that the old timers speak in awe of, and he never rated a mention until the events you describe. Maybe it is just too long ago - but there did not seem to be anyone speaking about him, even anecdotally.
