That's the thing with A Johns that i could never have him rated the best, he didn't beat the best eg Langer, Stuart etc, he dominated an era at halfback where the likes of Kimmorley, Gower, Orford were his competition.

I believe Ricky deserved more credit for revolustionising the kicking and passing games of players.

A Johns, super player, but i still remember 35 year old Alfie Langer giving him an absolute towling in SOO comeback game.

Langer was incredible. I remember one year Sterling got critisized for commenting that RL experts use the term great loosely and he even hinted that Fittler was overrated. At the time he stated that Langer was the only true great player. From memory it was in about 2000 that he made that comment.

Johns was a very very good player but he didn't have the opposition that players like Langer, Stuart, Sterling, Mortimer, Alexander, Hastings, Raudonikis had. I have no qualms in saying that all of those players were as good as if not better than Johns in much tougher eras of football.

The NRL needed a new superstar much like Origin did when it first started. Lewis and Johns IMO are by-products of that need for a superstar. That takes nothing away from them as players as they were brilliant - Lewis, I say begrudgingly is a better player than Johns, but I think there were players who were just as good andprobably a lot more consistent players.

Great post Colonel

In my eyes Origin made Lewis. However during Origin it was Kenny 8 Lewis 4 (when head to head).

Kenny was just an incredible 5/8th and was more consistent in club football then Lewis.

Five-eighth Wally Lewis. Oh, come on, you’re not going to argue with that are you? Thought you might, Ray, but I’m not going to waste time on that selection.

Halfback Andrew Johns. Allan Langer outplayed him whenever they clashed.

Anyone else see the irony there?
