Top 10 lists

Here's a question (obviously).

If every person on the planet (or the western world at least) was asked to list their top 10 songs of all time, would any two people come up with identical lists?

I'd say yes. Think of the band groupies...the ones who watch as many shows as they can, and run the bands' fansites etc. Some of them will probably compile top 10 lists comprising solely of songs from 1 band, and therefore some identical lists may result.

Has anybody ever had the exact same number of strands of hair as I do right now?

You only have to look at a forum like the John Butler Trio to see a bunch of sheep with the same top tens...all the hippiest sh*t that they can put on one list...just mindless sheep...

just mindless sheep...

Not unlike every Colf Chisel groupie, or po-punk lover or... oh wait. This is a trend not just confined to those who like hippy music.

In fact, I daresay even you're musical tastes are influenced by others. Perhaps you, too, are a sheep?

Noone would come up with the same list in order, imo.

With just 15 songs, there's 10 billion different combinations of 10.

Pffft. That's kind of funny, especially given the music you listen too (given your album choices anyway) is currently VERY trendy.

You should stop worrying what other people listen to so much.

Dude...I like JBT. I just dont think Xavier Rudd, Spearhead, The Waifs, et al are the best as well just to look cool on their forum...

I don't particularly give a toss what you think. I don't particularly give a toss what is cool or not - I've been listening to artists like Sufjan Stevens, Elbow, Iron & Wine, Spoon & Doves for years - they aren't artists I've just whacked on a list just to sound trendy to you. They (all besides Sufjan any way) are artists I've seen live a few times (at least) and have all their albums...

Please...while you are judging me you are listening to the same type of music!

Should have worded what I said better. I didn't mean to insult your music tastes. Nor do I mean to suggest YOU are a sheep. I have heaps of respect for you taste - I picked up A Cast of Thousands a couple of days because you have been giving it such a wrap. All I meant to say is, simply because people like the same music doesn't make them sheep. After all, there'd be people with the same music taste as you (like myself!) who have similar lists. Does that make me a sheep?

It's kinda funny, I can see how you took it as me judging you. What I intended was to say don't judge the blokes on the JBT forum! Anyway, I didn't intend it as a criticism of you really. Like I said, I have tonnes of respect for your taste and have bought 3-5 albums on your recommendation!

Ok, got a better way of explaining what I meant, so 3rd time lucky.

I was just saying you can't call them sheep just because they have the same list! By that logic, you could be called a sheep, because the music you (we?) like is pretty trendy at the moment. This ISN'T the case, I know, but it probably isn't the same for some the JBT/Xavier Rudd/Waifs fans either.

tbh i would consider myself somewhat a sheep cos i basically only listen to albums that are critically revered. i reason this by suggesting that i can't be bothered listening to every album ever released to filter out the good stuff when there are dedicated experts prepared to do that for me. plus i do love being hip

I guess I only referred to them as sheep because they all rave on about the same artists - i used to read the JBT forum (it was an interesting forumwith interesting topics before JB became more popular) and, for instance, they had a top albums of 2004 topic where everyone listed exactly the same artists - they all listed JBT, The Waifs, Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson, et al (in some cases the albums weren't even released in 2004!) - no one really varied. I know the 'sensative hippy-surfy' genre is cool at the moment, but surely they like other music as well?

I'm a music snob - no doubt...
