Who do you think is the in the top for modern songwriters (lyricologists)?

I think John Frusciante has some very intense lyrics. Every line of his lyrics means a lot, here's an examle. "Life's a bath, Sex is water".

And Pete Murray has a good poetic style as well.

I've bitten my tongue long enough...

Is there a way we can get this guy banned? Don't worry about his constant annoying posts about RHCP - he has bad taste in general...

Pete Murray? Give me a f***ing break...

So true. Pete Murray - you're kidding Funky. He's talentless.

Anyway, I rate Devin Townsend as the best modern songwriter in terms of the depth of his music and how much goes into it, plus of course the songs themselves. He's known for his "wall of sound" - basically he tends to lay down around 25 tracks which gives each song a massive sound. Plus you're always hearing something new in his music that you didn't notice before.

For lyrics, there are plenty of good ones. Laugh if you want but David Lee Roth is the greatest philosopher I've heard. Some of his stuff is just gold:

"Stamps in my passport, now they're polaroids and drinking stories,
I've got some good ones now, it's getting harder to ignore me.
Now I'm believin', half the reason, just for leavin' is coming home - what'd you see and who'd you do and what ya done"

Absa"f**ken"lutely..and add

PJ Harvey and Nick Cave

I notice Nick Cave's new outfit "Grinderman" got a 4 out of 5.

I heard "no pussy blues" and it a lot like his reall early stuff.

It is very dirty and brooding ....ol Nick actuallly goes quite hard in this song.

I agree with you that in general Pete Murray as an artist is nothing special, but from what i've heard his lyrics/poetry are up there.

Frusciante? His lyrics are AWFUL!

Here's an example:

"The Real"

I don't know the real from what I Know I saw
I can't remember where I went
Where I was
I'm gonna move toward a point in time
Where where you are is a state of mind
And anytime I can read your thoughts
Some of them yours and some of them I thought up
There's no good reason for a heartbreak
Nothing's repeating every Monday
It's no good saying you'll always be mine
These jokes life's playing it makes me so tired
It's already to much to always seen you off
The sense that hours go back is enough
I like to fade when I write this line
There's every reason to paint a decline
And every mile I walk is five
I'll get where I'm going in the next life
And all the while there's a false face
This every killing is left untraced
This kind of falling saved my son
This constant longing for what's gone

What the f**k? Just as bad as some of the more recent RHCP songs

"Can't Stop"

Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
Eastside love is living on the westend
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant
White heat is screaming in the jungle
Complete the motion if you stumble
Go ask the dust for any answers
Come back strong with 50 belly dancers

[Chorus:]
The world I love
The tears I drop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you
The world I love
The trains I hop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to

Sweetheart is bleeding in the snowcone
So smart she's leading me to ozone
Music the great communicator
Use two sticks to make it in the nature
I'll get you into penetration
The gender of a generation
The birth of every other nation
Worth your weight the gold of meditation
This chapter's going to be a close one
Smoke rings I know your going to blow one
All on a spaceship persevering
Use my hands for everything but steering
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
Mop tops are happy when they feed you
J. Butterfly is in the treetop
Birds that blow the meaning into bebop

[Chorus]

Wait a minute I'm passing out
Win or lose just like you
Far more shocking
Than anything i ever knew
How about you
10 more reasons
Why i need somebody new just like you
Far more shocking than anything I ever knew
Right on cue

Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
Eastside love is living on the westend
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant

Kick start the golden generator
Sweet talk but don't intimidate her
Can't stop the gods from engineering
Feel no need for any interfering
Your image in the dictionary
This life is more than ordinary
Can I get 2 maybe even 3 of these
Come from space
To teach you of the pliedes
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
This life is more than just a read thru

Awful. Absolutely awful.

For what it's worth, James Hetfield used to write some pretty damn good lyrics. Not so sure about recently though.

What the f**k dude? Maybe you should look at a few more of Frusciante's lyrics. The stuff he wrote during his heroin addiction is literally insane. You really have to be in the right frame of mind to understand them, you sir obviously aren't. Just because you don't understand the deeper meaning behind the point Frusciante is trying to get across doesn't mean the lyrics are awful.

Here's a good example of his poetry after he got clean:

And then the past recedes
and I won't be involved
The effort to be free
Seems pointless from above
You're looking down at me
I'd rather stay below
Than have you staring up at me
It is nowhere I want to go
Ay, this business of how long we try to stay alive
Why to be here you first got to die
so I gave it a try
And what do you know
Time was so long ago
And things come back you see
To where they don't belong
and every drop of sea is the whole ocean
I lied to the greatest thieves
about anything and everything
I'm a figure of forgotten speech
I'm out of reach
I can't play it safe
But I'm might just in case
I'm disguised as a reaching hand
I'm a working man
I don't understand why clockout
come so slow everytime
That's one line I stay right behind

but not as good as frenzal

Never claimed to be a model citizen, but I'm getting by
Used to drink and once I ate a whole cigarette,
but now I'm doing fine
Had to work out life without religion as a crutch
But some people struggle, inner demons are too much
There's a message for them

Red wine and altar boys are no way
to relieve your troubled mind

As a teenager he longed for a family
Waited for a sign to tell him why
He didn't feel like the other guys
Not that way inclined
Assessed the options for repressing inner truth
Of being ostracized or turning to the cloth
Put your head in the sand

Red wine and altar boys are no way to relieve your
troubled mind
No way to relieve your troubled mind

Twenty years of angry guilt and hypocrisy
just to pass the time
Twenty victims and a government
cover-up tow the party line
You f**ked up innocence with holy blessings and the
index finger of christ
And you prayed and it felt nice
And forgiveness is your god given right but

Red wine and altar boys are no way to relieve your
troubled mind
