Hmmm... I actually find the intro to wish you were here a bit boring, I just want the song to start. Doesnt do anything special for me that one.

I also wouldnt have money as number 1.

well going by those numbers I'm assuming its not the opening riffs of songs.
Money is in it twice????

THe 12 string guitar phrase over the opening riff in "Wish you were here " is a classic.
It suits the sombre feel of the whole song perfectly...IMO.

Yeah your right, the article isnt refering to opening riffs specifically It was my assumption you were refering to the solo in the intro of wish you were here.

Money is all about the bass line as far as I'm concerned.

I've heard a demo of R.Waters singing and playing the song on his bass....it was the demo he put to the band prior to the DSOTM recordings.

it was an acoustic guitar carc

was it??? My mistake.

I heard it on The J files a few years ago.

I have read R.W made notoriously dodgy demos for the band to listen to .
I read he did the entire wall on a dictaphone as a demo before he presented it to the band...could be a myth though.

sort of a myth

the wall when he wrote it didnt resemble the wall finished with a lot of stuff dropped and much introduced

apparently lots of arguments and bob ezrin was bought in to sort it all out and rick wright sacked by roger waters

its amazing such a masterpeice resulted from such turmoil

Pity Pink Floyd weren't together when Waters released 'The Pros and Cons of Hitch-hiking', the riff on 'Sexual Revolution' is outstanding. Would have been great to hear Gilmour play that one (can't argue with Eric Clapton's performance though).

These type of opinion pieces are always tough to judge. My guitar playing is crap, so I assume they are judging from a technical point of view. I just know what I like to hear and my top 10 would be:

1. Echoes (it's my favourite Floyd song so that was always going to get a mention)
2. Shine On (You Crazy Diamond)
3. Have a Cigar
4. One of these Days
5. Time
6. Atom Heart Mother
7. Dogs
8. Money
9. Comfortably Numb
10. Astronomy Domine

I guess it also depends on what era you are more familiar with (some of the riffs from 'More' are quite impressive also).

well said.

It all has to do with taste.

That song echoes was used in a old George Greenough movie called "Crystal Voyager".
George is a real ocean man, in the movie he builds a boat "the crystal voyager" so he can go and surf secluded places.
He rode an old transparent spoon kneeboard and an airmat.
Echoes in full is the last 20 or so mins of the movie where George took footage from the perspective of the surfer in the tube.
The footage is all in slow-mo and suits the music beautifully.

The rest of the soundtrack is pretty cool in an old hippy kind of way.

Shine on You Crazy Diamond (from a Collection of Great Dance Songs) thoroughly and TOTALLY owns all the other riffs, AND songs overall.

Can the people who write for that mag, even play guitar ?

There is only one band on this planet who consistently gives me goosebumps when i hear them play. That band of course, is Pink Floyd. When so-called afficianado's of guitar dont even contemplate the greateness that is Shine on you Crazy Diamond, from a Collection of Great Dance Songs, the ONLY song that ALWAYS gives me chills at its brilliance and pure musicianship, then i dont rate THEM. Begone kiddies, and go rate yet another lesser song ahead of THE greatest song...

You do realise that a collection of great dance songs is a compilation album?
"Shine on" is off the Wish you were here album....the song has part one and part two.
