Eagle King has belief in the local product

By DEAN RITCHIE

February 25, 2005

AFTER pledging his loyalty to Manly for another three years, front-rower Jason King last night spoke of his passionate desire to play finals football.

King, 24, was under contract until the end of this season but yesterday extended until the conclusion of 2008.

A potential representative forward, King said he wanted to secure his future before the NRL's June 30 deadline and did so by rejecting interest from rival clubs.

Having joined Manly, then the Northern Eagles, in 2001 King is yet to have played finals football – something he wants altered this season.

"I'd love to play in the finals, it would be unbelievable to do so," King said.

"Like a lot of people, I was a bit disillusioned by the Northern Eagles business and its just great Manly are back and they have rebuilt and we can now push for a finals spot.

"I have a lot of confidence in the club, they have a great administration and a great coach in Des Hasler."

A local Belrose product, King said family and friends pushed him to remain a Sea Eagle.

"I don't want to play anywhere else," King said.

"This was in the pipeline for a while and its great to have gotten this over and done with.

"I love the area and grew up in the Manly district.

"There was some talk about me leaving but all my family and friends wanted me to stay at Manly.

"I even got phone messages to say stay."

Manly executive director Paul Cummings said his club was delighted to have retained King.

"Jason is highly regarded and the type of young player and person we want as a lifetime player with the club," Cummings said.

"He has watched Steve Menzies come through our junior ranks and become one club player and there is every hope Jason King will follow the same route with similar success."

King will play in Manly's trial match against St George-Illawarra at Albion Park tomorrow night.

Ricky doesn't call the shots. Gus does. End of story.

Not just Gus, apparently supercoach Sticky is actually an amalgamation of two former coaches, Gus and Wok, that Bulldog connection is working beautifully for you Roosters.

got some aweful bad new for you - any way it was stated in the papers that the club haadn't spoken to him and King's manager said it was news to him that the Roosters had made negotiations...a complete beat up and I hope through it King ripped Manly for another $50,000 per year

MANLY THE FOOLS....paid a motza more for an untried untested nobody, because his manager screwed them by dropping "Roosters" in a conversation with them.

The oldest play in the book, still proves there's a dope born every minute, 2 in Manly.

I reckon this was all King's manager playing on the fact the Rooster were interested a long time ago. I ain't gonna speculate and say the Roosters wanted to sign him this time. The Roosters seem to have Morley and Cayless pretty much comitted, and from whats been said some pretty good front rowers coming through. I doubt King even crossed their minds.

On the Roosters I think we'll see a trend of them not buying as many top grade talent in terms of the likes they signed this year. They ain't gonna pay 4 times what everyone else is paying juniors to lure them away from their clubs and not use them. That would be stupid, and the Roosters aren't stupid.

Careful mate, the Roosters tried to pay a motza for Bott, an untried, untested nobody.

You clown! A contract means NOTHING! If Ricky wants King -- and he doesn't -- he'll get him. Deal with it.

Rightio, and hows Bott looking in Rooster colours? or Lockyer?

Also remember this, half the Roosters supporters on here are involved directly with Roosters recruiting and talk daily with R. Stuart and G. Gould on who they should and shouldn't pursue.

When the article was released about Bott signing with the Broncos, it says he knocked back $120,000 from the Roosters.
