LONDON: The Kangaroo tour may be back on. English rugby league officials are quietly optimistic that an Australian team - minus captain Brad Fittler - could visit Great Britain for a shortened tour.
The tour was cancelled on Wednesday when players, led by Fittler, voted against travelling to Great Britain, worried for their safety following the US-led military attacks on Afghanistan. But an outcry in both Australia and England is believed to have encouraged the Australian Rugby League to think again. English officials met for three-and-a-half hours yesterday and while none would discuss the "very, very tense situation" publicly, the mood was notably lighter. "We're considering several options," a Rugby Football League spokesman said. But others said there was a mood of optimism that hadn't been there this week. "I think your countrymen may be thinking again," one official said. The RFL took heart from the reaction in Australia to the cancellation, which could leave the RFL up to $8.73 million in the red. "I haven't been surprised the reaction because people there understand what Kangaroo tours mean to people, not just on that side of the world but over here too," said RFL rugby director Greg McCallum. "It was the beginning of what was going to be the resurrection of international rugby league, so it was a fairly significant decision." However, he would not be drawn on any possible tour, saying only: "Within the next 24 hours we will know what our international program will be for November." Cheers Retread
