On fire - Vodafone Junior Warriors 46, Bulldogs 16

Second rower Ben Henry and standoff Shaun Johnson scored 30 points between them as the Vodafone Junior Warriors produced a 62-point turnaround in the space of nine days by crushing the Bulldogs 46-16 in today’s 18th-round NYC clash at Mount Smart Stadium.

The Auckland side was on the end of a 32-point trouncing by Brisbane on July 3 when an 18-16 halftime advantage ended in an 18-50 loss.

But today the Vodafone Junior Warriors unleashed on the Bulldogs extending a 22-10 halftime lead into a 30-point winning margin, a result that edged them up to seventh spot on the NYC ladder with 21 points.

Henry scored a hat-trick and Johnson 18 points from a try and seven goals from eight attempts as the Vodafone Junior Warriors took their points total beyond 400.

There was some anxiety when they allowed the Bulldogs to come back to 16-22 with an early second half try but it was all one-way from there on, the home side scoring four unanswered tries including another superb long-range intercept effort by Johnson for the final try of the contest.

Johnson now has 121 points from nine tries, 42 goals and a field goal.

The outcome meant the young Bulldogs have leaked 110 points in their last two matches after losing 16-64 to Manly on Monday night.

DRAGONS NYC TEAM GO DOWN TO MANLY 33 - 6

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have today been defeated 33 – 6 by a strong-looking Manly outfit in what was a top-of-the-table clash at WIN Stadium Wollongong.

After a bruising opening 10 minutes where both teams were intent on asserting their dominance, it was the Dragons defense that cracked first, with a good interchange of passing close to the line leading to big Manly second-rower Darcy Lussick crashing over. Mitchell Porter missed the conversion. Manly taking an early lead 4-0.

The 15th minute and Manly were in again, after a brilliant attacking raid that started with Many half-back Daly Cherry-Evans, making a break on his own 20metre line off a scrum and running 80metres, before finding centre Matt Grieve in support who outpaced the Dragons cover defenders and dived over in the north-west corner. Porter converted the try and the Sea-Eagles raced to a 10-0 lead.

Five minutes later and Manly stretched their lead to 14-0, as some good hands seen the ball travel wide to once again find Grieve, who this time scored in the north-eastern corner. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the score remained Manly 14, Dragons 0.

With the Dragons starting to find their feet and seriously threaten the Sea-Eagles defense, Manly once again exposed some poor Dragons defense up the middle of the ruck, as hooker Liam Higgins made a scampering run beating two defenders, before turning the ball back inside to find Gary Riccardi in support who scored under the posts. Porter converted and took the Sea-Eagles lead out to 20-0.

Two minutes out from half-time and Manly had extended their lead, with a beautiful short-ball finding a barnstorming Darcy Lussick who was too hard to stop close to the line. Porter converted the goal and Manly took a 26-0 lead into halftime.

The Dragons were uncharacteristically off the pace in the first half and were looking to be the first to score in the second-half in order to stay in the match.

Manly started the second-half like they finished the first, attacking the Dragons line, although some scrambling Dragons defense seen the score remain 26-0.

The Dragons slowly start to gain momentum, and an attacking raid down the short side in the 56th minute in which Dean Whare produced quick hands to put Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa over in the north-eastern corner saw the Dragons on the comeback trail. Beau Henry converted from the sideline. Manly 26, Dragons 6.

The Dragons looked to have gained much confidence out of the Fai-Fai Loa try, but could not seem to break Manly’s defensive line, with winger Joe Vickery being tackled into touch over the Sea-Eagles try-line.

Eight minutes left and with the game slipping from the grasp of the Dragons, Manly captain and lock-forward Jamie Buhrer scored off a well-worked move, running through almost untouched. This try was converted by Mitchell Porter and the Sea-Eagles lead surges out to an almost unbeatable 32-6.

The final blow for the Dragons came in the 79th minute when Manly half-back Daly Cherry-Evans plotted a field-goal from 20 meters out.

Eels 28 - Titans 26 - Full Time in the Toyota Cup

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have pulled off their second come from behind victory in as many weeks in the Toyota Cup, climbing back from 18-6 down to defeat the Gold Coast Titans 28-26 at Skilled Park.

Three tries to winger Ryan Morgan helped the Eels cancel out the deficit, the visitors then withstanding a late Titans surge to claim the win.

The Titans hit the front inside 60 seconds, thanks to a converted try from halfback Cody Walker, but by the tenth minute the Eels had squared the ledger with Nathan Gardner touching down off an Albert Kelly bomb.

A repeat performance from the Titans, with Walker scoring for hooker Kayne Lawton to convert, followed by a blockbusting try to second rower Dominic Walsh saw the home side lead by 18-6 midway through the half

The Eels managed to peg one back with ten minutes remaining in the half, with Morgan scoring wide out after some neat work through the hands, seeing the visitors head to the sheds trailing 18-12.

The Titans however would start the second half as they did the first, with winger Lachlan Creighton touching down wide out for a 22-12 lead.

But the Eels again hit back through a Kelly bomb, the halfback scoring himself after the Titans spilt it close to the line.

Gardner’s conversion reduced the gap to four at 22-18.

With momentum swinging their way the Eels took full advantage, swinging it wide again to Morgan who touched down for his second try in the corner. Again Gardner converted from the sideline to give his side the lead at 24-22.

The Titans thought they’d taken back the lead when Walker found his way to the line soon after, only for the referee to rule he’d dropped it in the act of scoring.

On the Eels next trip down the park they’d make it hurt that much more, a beautifully weighted pass from TK Amosa to Rory Brien giving the visitors an overlap, which was converted into points by Morgan who went in for his third try.

From there the Eels looked to shut down the contest, with a Kelly shot at field goal going just wide, however it would the Titans who’d be next – and ultimately last – to score, with replacement Ricardo Parata diving over to give the home side a sniff at 28-26.

Lawton was left with a tough assignment to square it up, his sideline conversion attempt going wide, allowing the Eels to close it out for a hard fought win.
