Toyota Cup - whats doing?

Not here to gloat at all as it was a pretty good game and you lot nearly stole it at the end.

more a question about your young guys.

78-10 loss is a massive loss. is the group just a poor group (like the first 2 sharks TC seasons) or are they not bad and it was it just one of those games?

also. you have to try and keep Brett Stewart. he's brilliant. you could lose guys like williams and others but it would be a real shame if he left manly.

Dare I say a suggest effect of Crusher going?

Or not putting enough money/other resources into them?

Went great in 2009 (2010?), rubbish every other year, for the most part.

There's a bit of a hole in that age group at the club, the young guys are either playing NSW Cup now or still in SG Ball. Lack of money would be the biggest problem. The club was never a fan of the 20's when Hasler was around, preferring to play the beat Toyota Cup eligible players in NSW Cup, not sure if that's still the case.

I would say it's because of your young guns in FG that have left a hole. You guys have a bit of a history of having shit lower grades, with a quality FG side, whats the go with that?

Less money to spend on lower grades than most clubs. Can't really compete with big money offers, just do our best to hold on to the top guys and let the others walk.

Unlike some clubs (Bulldogs come to mind) Manly use their lower grades purely for development. Results are secondary by a long margin. They could lose every game in every grade below first grade and the club wouldn't really mind as long as they could pull some talent from those teams. Manly were one of the favourites last year in NSW cup but with players moving from NYC to NSW Cup and NSW Cup to 1st grade there were too many disruptions and they came closer to last than first. Despite poor results in Toyota cup since 2009 (when they had the likes of Foran, DCE, Lussick, Maria-Hargeaves, Tasi, Buhrer, Hopoate, Oldfield, etc) they've managed to keep a flow of young blokes coming through to fill gaps in first grade. Fortunately young blokes from outside the area still feel that coming to Manly on almost no salary is potentially good for their future due to the record Manly have in identifying and developing talent.

Is there anyone in this current side that will push into first grade in the next few years? I noticed on the website their is an outside back listed who's the size of Darcy Lussick.

Jorge Taufua? He was 18th man in round 1 and is on an extended bench this week. Pretty much anyone pushing for 1st grade selection will be playing NSW Cup rather than NYC. Even if they're under 20 they will be pushed up to NSW Cup so that they get more experience against older blokes. NYC seems to have heaps of focus on attack and very little on defense, players need some time playing in a more structured defensive line tackling bigger blokes. Imagine going from NYC to having T-Rex of Fui running at you.

Taufua doesn't qualify for NYC this year and neither does Annear who's been named on the bench this week.

Don't know who considered Manly favourites last year in the NSW Cup. It was pretty obvious from the out-set the club would struggle given they weren't financially equipped to form a NSW Cup side. In the end the side was just a bunch of rookies mixed in with scrubs who couldn't get an opportunity elsewhere. It's a shame Carr threw the hissy fit they did because their affiliation with the Sunshine Coast worked wonders for both parties.

This.

I dare say that without the Sunshine Coast setup, DCE wouldn't be at the level he is today.

Agree with all that. I never would have suspected Manly would be close to favourites in any grade other than 1st grade but there apparantly was high expectations last year for whatever reason. Had the Sunshine Coast not won the grand final in their first year I wonder if the response would have been the same? It was certainly beneficial for all involved.
