Qantas Wallabies Take Shape for Bledisloe Cup
July 17, 2007 - 11:00am
Story by: ARU

The Qantas Wallabies are aiming for a clean sweep of trophies for the 2007 domestic season when they clash with New Zealand in the Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations decider at Eden Park in Auckland this Saturday (5.35pm kick off AEST).
Having already collected the James Bevan Trophy and Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate, victory over the All Blacks on Saturday night will end a five-year Bledisloe Cup drought for the Wallabies and see the Tri Nations trophy return to Australia for the first time since 2001.
Coach John Connolly has delayed making a final decision on his starting fullback until tomorrow (Wednesday) after Julian Huxley was ruled out with a corked quadriceps muscle. 72-Test veteran and 2006 John Eales Medalist Chris Latham remains in contention to make his first appearance for the Wallabies in 2007 after undergoing a full knee reconstruction in January. Latham has been bracketed with Adam Ashley-Cooper, who if selected in the number 15 jersey will start in his fourth different backline position in seven Test appearances this season.
Connolly has also made changes to his forward pack, with Stephen Moore returning at hooker after recovering from a sternum injury and David Lyons earning a start at Number 8. After leading the Wallabies to victory over the All Blacks in Melbourne, Stirling Mortlock will again captain the side and will be deputised by starting openside flanker George Smith and Phil Waugh. While the Wallabies match 22 is yet to be finalised, both Mark Chisholm and Sam Cordingley have been nominated as touring reserves.
Connolly compared Saturday night’s blockbuster to a World Cup Final. “Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations deciders are right up there alongside World Cup Finals,” said Connolly. “Opportunities to play in Tests like this don’t come around too often and Saturday night will be a very special occasion. It is certainly the biggest match a number of our players have faced,” he added.
The 24-man Wallabies touring squad will depart Sydney for Auckland Wednesday, 18th July.

sh*t that AB side looks good, I reckon that's pretty much our #1 starting XV there. You could argue the 14, 12, & 2 spots but only because we've got players who're approiximately equal in ability in those positions to those named.
The bench looks solid too, we'd lose very little from most substitutions.

nick evans looked good on saturday night, i really dont think McAliister is a very good center/2nd five.

Leonard is the all new excitement machine.. watch this space.

No Mauger in the starting side?

I actually think that he's the cool head in the backline and helps Dan Carter a fair bit. I expect Super Dan to have another so-so game (god I hope I am right) and the Wallaby backline to click.

McAlister and Toeava are the weak links in that backline. I dare say Australia has the edge there with Mortlock and Giteau.

Heart says Wallabies by 4...brain says NZ by 6....

I would have had steady realible Mauger in at 12 and possibly Leonard in at 9...Kelleher IMO has been average this year and his kicking game is poor from the base of the scrum.

Yes he does bring aggression that can impact Gregan but Leonard brings pace and agility that would fire the AB's backline more.

The reserves look strong...Tialata and Evans will make immediate impact should they be called on.

AB's by 10.

All Blacks will win, but without Huxley to f**k everything up, Australia will keep the score close imo.

Mauger reliably misses tackles... I think Mortlock owns him.

Kelleher and Weepu are both poor test halfbacks - Leonard is very promising - can they select Justin Marshall for the World Cup squad?

Horan blasts selectors

By Peter Jenkins
July 18, 2007

AUSTRALIA legend Tim Horan last night blasted Wallabies selectors after they fast-tracked a Test return for world-class full back Chris Latham.

Horan accused the national panel of treating Latham "unfairly" after it called him up to play New Zealand in Auckland on Saturday night.

The Wallabies veteran - named on the bench for the Bledisloe Cup and Tri-Nations decider - is just 1 1/2 club games into his comeback from six months out with knee damage.

"Latho is the most courageous player we have at the moment, but I'm thinking about his build-up to the World Cup and his longevity in the game," Horan said.

"It's an unfair call on Chris. People who understand knee reconstructions will know it's amazing he's already playing so soon.

"This would be like asking Darren Lockyer, when he comes back from his knee injury, to play two Queensland Cup games and then go straight into State of Origin.

"Mentally this is a massive step and a step too early in my opinion.

"The whole idea was to get Latho back for the World Cup, and that's on track. But he needs another couple of games at a lower level."

Around midday yesterday Latham was going to start the Test.

Wallabies coach John Connolly indicated there might be greater risk attached to shifting in-form winger Adam Ashley-Cooper to full back for the injured Julian Huxley.

But at lunchtime the selectors spoke to Latham and Ashley-Cooper, before convening to make a decision.

There was a suggestion from one selector that Drew Mitchell play at full back before Ashley-Cooper was given the nod, primarily because Latham expressed reservations about his readiness for such a major occasion.

"He's not comfortable where he is skill-wise, so that's an issue," Connolly said at training last night.

"At the moment his skill factor is a bit hit and miss. We had a lot of talks and we went round in circles.

"There were a number of areas to look at, including his physical fitness in terms of going the whole match. He hasn't played at all, so there's every chance he could implode early.

"But we still think he's got a role to play. The intention is to get him on the field."

What concerns Horan is that it could be sooner rather than later.

"The rule when you're on the bench is that you've got to be prepared to play 79 minutes if someone goes down at the start," he said. "Latho would never let Australia down but is he ready for that?"

When the side was finalised Ashley-Cooper - the find of the season - was handed the full back responsibilities, Mitchell was called in as a starting winger and Latham was included on the bench.

"Adam is fit and he knows all the calls," said Connolly.

"But obviously full back is totally different to wing and that's the risk we're taking."

The All Blacks have made three changes to the side that defeated the Springboks last week, with halfback Byron Kelleher, hooker Anton Oliver and flanker Jerry Collins returning to the side.

Saying a centre is poor because he missed tackles on Mortlock is rather unfair, you could say that about just about any centre going around right now. Personally I like McAlister at 12 but not at 13, so I'm happy enough with his selection. If Mortlock and Giteau start carving us up no doubt they'll bring Mauger in anyway.

I just think Mauger provides some stability for Carter...and I think we'll be seeing him straight after halftime.

I don't rate Toeava....and I think the AB's are struggling to find a solid 13 after the departure of Tana.

Poor test halfbacks ???...beats having a choice as opposed to the Aussies having Gregan and sweet FA else ????.

Lyons joins Aussie injury list

July 19, 2007 AUSTRALIA suffered another setback today with No.8 David Lyons ruled out of Saturday's Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup decider because of a blood clot in a calf muscle.

Chosen to start against New Zealand at Eden Park, Lyons completed the bulk of training today before speaking to the team doctor.

He was later ruled out as team officials called a press conference to announce the news, with utility forward Mark Chisholm called into the match squad.

It's another blow for the Wallabies,. who lost full back Julian Huxley earlier in the week to a thigh cork suffered when tackled by Super 14 teammate Gene Fairbanks at a function after the Brumbies' awards on Saturday night.

Wallabies coach John Connolly could opt to promote Stephen Hoiles from the bench for another start at No.8 after he impressed in that role in the win over South Africa in Sydney.

However, he also has the option of switching Rocky Elsom to No.8 and promoting Chisholm or Hugh McMeniman from the bench to blindside flanker.

Can't say I am disappointed that Lyons is not there. Nothing against Lyons, but Hoiles was one of the main reasons we did so well in the latter stages of the last Bledisloe match!

What a crap game to watch

The Wallabies were awful, never looked like scoring a try, may as well have left everybody outside Larkham at home. Classic kick n clap rubbish.
