Tri-Nations Test - TV Ratings

Pretty poor crowd, but the ratings for the match on TV in Sydney were fantastic.

It peaked at 603,000 and looks to have averaged over 550,000. Thats a great result - an improvement on the Anzac test from earlier in the year, and also just for a bit of context considerably higher than the figure the Sydney Bledisloe Cup match achieved on FTA in Sydney earlier in the year in the same timeslot.

Considering that its an unusual timeslot for RL and that the Kiwis were missing their best and most marketable players for what looked like being another flogging, thats a great performance. Just goes to show that the interest in international RL is there - even if it is somewhat latent. Results like last night's will go a long way towards converting this interest into higher crowds.

This years Trinations is crucial, and its off to the best possible start. A fiercely contested series will do wonders for the international game in the leadup to next years Trinations here and the WC in 2008. The Kiwis are strenghtening beautifully and will be the best team in the world by the world cup. If we can carry some momentum through this years series, the next couple of years will see international RL come on in leaps and bounds IMO.

RL internationals always seem to rate well, its just a matter of bums on seats that seems to let it down and i suppose media coverage could be better, i mean what other sporting events are going on this weekend?

The cricket, who gives a f**k...

THat's a bit of a contradiction isn't it? You think the RL deserves more media coverage, yet you say a test between Australia and the World XI is something no ones cares about.

The thing about it is the cricket has been a disappointment, the league last night was a huge surprise.

I think quite a few people care about the cricket just as much. It was just poor scheduling on the ARL'S behalf. I am sorry to say but if it was on this weekend rather than last week I think the RL would have no problem getting 40,000 as the media coverage of the cricket would be finished. Add to that it suits NZ more, as it is sei-final weekend in the NPC rather than the final which is this week!

NRL.com have the game kicking off at 5.00pm AEST. If that is the case, NZ being three hours ahead, that will mean an 8.00pm kick off NZ time. The TV guide has the game scheduled for 7.30pm AEST on Channel 9, which will mean a 2.30h delay,

Those ratings prove Sydney people want to watch the game but are not willing to pay the outrageous prices the ARL is charging for Test matches. They expect families to pay two or three times the price of a club game ticket for a game that attracts less media attention and promotion than most NRL games. Someone needs to teach the ARL about demand and supply because at the moment the demand in not there are the prices they are charging. I'd also like to see an organisation like the ARL help the fans see the game.

Glad the TV ratings were high in Sydney. Pity that the rest of Aus (excluding Brisbane I guess) didn't get the chance to watch our national side play at a decent time. 11.30 in Melb. At least Foxtel had the game at 10

How is $60 outragous price for the best seats at the ground for an international? They are less than Origin, Preliminary Final and Grand Final matches at the same ground for the same seasons.

There were tickets there for $20 as well, it costs that much to sit on the ends of Parramatta stadium.

Also lets not forget for the whole time the ARL/NRL promoted the 'Kids get in free' with a paying adult line. The tickets were less than what it costed to watch the test match at Suncorp in Brisbane, and that almost sold out.

I think you would find that the NRL/ARL/NSWRL both did a very poor combined effort of promoting the match. The QRL did a lot better job with the Bundaberg Test and it showed with lead up coverage and crowds.

I got $30 (odd) seats for Lang Park. To get the same view at Telstra I'd have to pay double. That's pretty ordinary. I'm an above average international fan but I wouldn't pay $60 for a ticket. If I were an rl fan but not overly fussed by internationals and I had to take my whole family even $20 for a crap seat would be steep. The game wasn't promoted well but enough people knew it was on that half a million people in the host city watched on telly. While 28,000 went that half a million people obviously weren't prepared to spend that money to go to the game either. If I thought the ARL would make more money out of charging high prices it wouldn't be so bad - but they probably don't make more because it turns so many away. And I wouldn't mind them making more money if they put it all back into international development - but it's highly doubtful they would.

The difference is Origin is now seen as the pinnacle of playing standard, but also it's maximum value in terms of popularity is also reached.

For it's level, well the biggest stadiums are used - supply, is combined with the highest esteem for mthe public - demand.

You know what happens when supply and demand are maxed.

Internationals appear to many of us here to have an instrinsic value below what many of us think they should be.

It is the job of the ARL to raise the esteem of the game in the public, not for the ARL to assume its value is high and expect the public to react accordingly.

Yes, but that test likewise didn't have a big cricket match it what is in the minds of many people 'cricket' season.

The ARL has to push the idea in the minds of many that after the GF, the RL season isn't finished.

No doubts, promotion was very good for that game.

My only contention is that the task at hand for the test in Sydney required more promotion of the game in Brisbane.

That said the ARL failed at their job.

That match was one of the best I've ever seen. I don't get that excited by Origin any more, but Test footy is something else. The skills, panache and flair were out of this world. It took something special to break through, and there was plenty special on display. 28,000 is pretty crummy though.

Disapointing isn't it... people just can't be bothered going if it's on TV it seems. I went and got a 20 buck ticket and we all had a ball! It's really a shame in my opinion, 80,000 at a roos match in Sydney would look fantastic! The ARL should probably put more money into helping develope the NZ domestic comp to give them more deapth and maybe have the Lions come down for a 3 test series, but let them start by playing the top 6 clubs so they have plenty of time to gel. I really hope international league can get back on its feet.

If Australia lose this series and GB come out here next year, you will see massive increases in crowd numbers. If Australia's status as unbeatable is under threat, then a lot of people will automatically think "contest" and the Poms will draw well and have a large supporter base in Sydney. It would be great to see test footy get back to the level it was at in the early nineties.

If N.Z put their top side on the paddock, they will be very hard to be for the forseeable future.

Absolutely! But with the test season begining when the players are all sore and sorry it's not been very easy... I think the only option is a real shortening of the club comp... but internationals would have to justify it first.

It's unfortunate that the average league fan can't be hood winked like our Union cousins who turn up to just about anything and everything with the word International in it.

Competitiveness is all thats missing on the International League stage and I mean regular competition...not just one-offs!

Once we get it (if we get it) it'll be at least, as big as Origin, likewise if Origin ever lost its competitiveness...its esteem will start to wear (not that we want that to happen of course).
