NRL trial pulled from flood-hit Mackay

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 - 4:12 PM

Flood damage has robbed Mackay of a rugby league trial expected to raise thousands of dollars for the recovering central Queensland city.

The NRL pre-season clash between North Queensland Cowboys and Canberra Raiders will now be played at Townsville's Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night rather than the Mackay Junior Rugby League (MJRL) grounds.

The match was dubbed the Charity Shield and was set to be a major fundraiser for Mackay's junior and senior clubs and charities.

The city is still recovering after a freak deluge of 624mm in 10 hours on February 15.

A taskforce has been set up by the Queensland government to tackle the mammoth task of restoring Mackay, where about 450 homes are expected to remain uninhabitable for up to five months.

Another 3,500 homes have serious water damage.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has compared the task to that which faced authorities in Innisfail following Cyclone Larry in March 2006.

Mackay District Rugby League chairman Greg Sutherland said the game's relocation was another blow to the rebuilding city.

He said the playing surface at the MJRL grounds had recovered well despite being under 112mm of water this time last week.

However, he said the dressing rooms, canteen, first aid room and office were flood damaged.

Mr Sutherland said the game had been set to attract about 8,500 spectators.

He said the money raised from the match would have set up local charities and local league clubs "for the year".

"It's just heartbreaking," he said.

Curtain raisers between Mackay Queensland Cup-Cowboys under-20 sides and the Mackay Foley Shield-Toowoomba Queensland Cup teams are now expected to be held at nearby Sarina.

"It's sad, but that's life," Mackay District Rugby League's Carolyn Craig said.

Cairns - which attracted more than 12,000 people for last weekend's Gold Coast-Cowboys trial - and Canberra were considered options for the relocated match.

However, Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr confirmed on Tuesday the match would be held at their home ground, Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Burns to start at halfback for Cowboys

Wednesday, February 27, 2008 - 5:42 PM

Cowboys star recruit Travis Burns has been named at halfback for North Queensland's hastily arranged trial against Canberra on Saturday.
With the Cowboys racing the clock to find a replacement for the injured Johnathon Thurston former Manly utility Burns will partner Justin Smith in the halves.
Cronulla signing Anthony Watts failed to impress in the Cowboys last trial against Gold Coast and has been dropped to play Queensland Cup newcomers Mackay Cutters.
With the Cowboys round one clash against Gold Coast rapidly approaching Cowboys CEO Peter Parr gave the best indication that Burns will be the man to fill Thurston's shoes, who is on track for a round five comeback.
"It is the last trial before the season kicks off," Parr said.
"What usually happens is that both teams pick their best available sides.
"This case is no different and it will be a great game of footy and the most important thing is that we are able to provide a game for us and Canberra."
With the game transferred to Townsville from the flood ravaged Mackay, Parr said the club would be doing everything possible to help the town recover.
"It is bitterly disappointing for the Mackay District Rugby League and the community that the game isn't there but any profit generated will go back to the Mackay community."
In a further boost to the Cowboys 2008 campaign Australian representative Luke O'Donnell and the hard-hitting Steve Southern return from long injury lay-offs to the starting pack.

Either that or the entire world has once again under estimated the wealth of talent in the young Raiders outfit.

Will anyone be posting scores for this one?

without JT the cowboys are nothing
canberra should run rings around them, if they dont beat that cowboys team, we're not looking good for finals footy

From what I can tell, the stampede is full of raiders fans who've signed up at the last minute in desperation (like I did!).

The latest they have is cowboys 20 raiders 12 at half time.

I preferred raider_69s Harold Holt story. He'd probably be better as dummy half though - with Menzies and George Reid as 8 & 10.
