Triple J's Impossible Music Festival

Anybody seen this on the J's website? What they are doing is getting people to vote for the ten live sets they would most like the hear, and then over a weekend they are planning on playing the top ten in full, with parts of others in between.

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/livemusic/

There are some magic sets in there...so I thought we could also have our own mini-poll over here as well and see what people would vote for.

Mine is:

At The Drive-In (2001 - hopefully it is from BDO Melbourne and a full set as opposed to BDO Sydney where they walked off after 4 songs - but those 4 songs were awesome)
Beastie Boys (1995 - they wouldn't have made the cut if it was 2005)
Ben Harper (2001 - Accoustic solo, plays "Indifference" with Ed Vedder. I was there and saw it live - one of the biggest highlights of my life)
Crowded House (1991 - a great live band at the peak of their career)
Dandy Warhols (2000 - around the release of "Thirteen Tales")
Gomez (2000 - again, a band at the peak of their recorded careers that can really play a great live show)
Hilltop Hoods (2003 - probably one of the top few live acts in Australia at the moment)
Jeff Buckley (1995 - if only because I didn't get to see him live when I had the chance to do so...)
Pearl Jam (1998 - best live band on the planet, plus we'll never be able to see them in a festival any other way)
You Am I (1998 - probably the best live band in Australia when they were really at their peak)

Close but no cigar:

* Nirvana (1992 - iconic act but really not that good live (although Unplugged is brilliant))
* Muse (2004 - because triple j have not recorded Radiohead live, but that wasn't enough to include them)
* Spearhead (1995 - I have never seen a crowd connect to an artist like they do with Michael Franti - an amazing spectical. however you don't get to see it on radio either...)
* Flaming Lips (2004 - sorta loses something by not being able to see the stageshow, but a fantastic experience to see live)
* Shihad (1999 - again, in the Top 3 Australasian live bands at the moment, recorded when they really started to hit their prime. This one hurt the most to not include. First reserve.)

There is an older You Am I one from around 95 I think, it went off.
Around Hi Fi Way era.
I really loved the Nirvana one, I taped it.

This is a great idea from the mighty J's.

Here's my ten:

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (2005)
Dinosaur Jr (1995)
Everclear (1997) - During their 1997 Australian tour, during a gig at Wollongong Uni, Lead singer Art Alexarkis was hit in the head with a shoe and all the bands gear was stolen from their truck. They vowed never to come back to Wollongong again...lol
Faith No More (1995)
Hard-On's (1989)
Iggy Pop (1998)
Scientists (1983)
Smashing Pumpkins (1998)
Sonic Youth (1993)
Tom Waits (1979)

I went well and truely off triple J after about grade 11 - what was that, 2000 I think - and just recently have been forced to start giving it a go again and am starting to warm to it once more.

Anywho, heres what i went with:

METALLICA (2004) - One of the best gigs Ive heard and was lucky enough to be at, inside the D Barrier at the 2004 Gold Coast big day out

FAITH NO MORE (1995) - I think the most under rated band of the 90s. Always put on a good live show at alernate nations to.

RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS (1999) - Toss up between this and the Grinners for my 3rd favourite. I went with Chili's just because they put on an unbelievable live show - although a lot of it would be lost over the radio

GRINSPOON (1999) - I took a punt on this one, I think this is their gig from new years eve 99/00 at the falls festival. If it is that show it is a cracker - just before they turned to soft dribble.

ANTHRAX (1996) - Im not sure where this one was recorded and there is a fair chance I havent even heard this particular gig, but I love Anthrax live.

BOOM CRASH OPERA (1986) - I havent heard this gig, as I was only 2 at the time - but Id love to. I never got a chance to hear the boom crashers play live and this might be my chance

FOO FIGHTERS (1998) - Not the gig I would have chosen, but for some reason JJJ only give you one Foo'ys concert to choose and they went with 98. I reckon their show in 02 I think it was, was brilliant and Dave and the boys always rock on.

AREA 7 (1999) - I absolutely loved their debut album back in the day, which was weird coz i usually hate skar, but this was an awesome listen, I remember sitting at home on a monday night doing maths homework when this came on live at the wireless

COLDPLAY (2003) - Once again a weird choice for me as I usually hate this genre, but for some reason this album just got me, I loved it - and the concert triple J has is a good quality one that I want to hear again

DANDY WARHOLS (2000) - And lets make it 3 in a row for the out of character choices. For some reason I just loved their 13 tales CD and if memory serves me correctly this is the concert where they played a lot of gear off that.

I really wanted to include the Frenzal Rhomb set from about 98 or 99 on live at the wirless - one of the funniest shows Ive ever heard, the music went alright too!

And Rage Against the Machine's last show at the grand olympic is well and truely in my top 10, but I have it on DVD and hear it all the time so I thought id vote for something different that I dont always hear.

BLINK-182 (1998)- because they actually have a chance of being played and i dont mind them.
CAT EMPIRE (2003)- awesome band, not usually my sort of thing but there stuff just makes me want to dance.
FUGAZI (1991)- yep, fugazi
LIVING END (1998)- 2nd best aussie band
MILLENCOLIN (2002)- i like millencolin before 2002 so hopefully this gig was just before that sh*tty album that came out that year.
OFFSPRING (1995)- Man Offspring was the first rock band i liked, so gotta give it to them, and it was in 95 that i started to like them, so this gig would rule.
RAMONES (1980)- hell yeah!
SPARTA (2003)- i saw them once before some other band i cant remember who and they f**king ruled.
X (1976)- oh man these guys were the original punk band, f**k yeah
FRENZAL RHOMB (2002)- best aussie band

Pretty sure it was

Frenzal Rhomb (2002)
The Living end (1998)
Millencolin (2002)
Metallica (2004)
Faith No More (1995)
Smashing Pumpkins(1998)
Midnight Oil (1980)
Queens Of The Stone Age(2003)
Foo Fighters(1998)

And someone else, possibly grinspoon or green day or mighty mighty bosstones

And Pennywisealfie, great minds think alike regarding the best two aussie bands.

Wish it was an earlier frenzal live set, 2000 was really good, others i've heard snippets of were good as well.

I went:

A PERFECT CIRCLE (2000)
EVERMORE (2004)
LIOR (2005)
LITTLE BIRDY (2005)
MAGIC DIRT (1997)
MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES (1998)
MUSE (2004)
PLACEBO (2004)
QUEENS OF STONE AGE (2003)

- Smashing Pumpkins would have made the cut probably in place of Little Birdy but were mistakenly overlooked.
