Trolls - what is the answer

I opened my big mouth on the moderators forum saying that this place should allow more 'freedom of speech', but also conceeding that people who want to talk about the good points of Union should be allowed to do so in relative peace.
For my sins, they made me a moderator.
I suppose I now need to make a positive impact on this forum, both for people who want to follow Union and people who want to have their say about the game in negative terms.

One idea I have had is to mark all threads either positive or negative so that people who want to either bag or praise the game can confine themselves to the posts that suit their prejudices, but it seems a bit difficult to enforce (we do it on the Knights section with football threads and non football threads, which are marked NFT for non football thread).

Anyway - I'm ready to hear ideas, because I'm not doing any good at the moment with coming up with a plan to get this forum back on track, so tell me what we need to do so everyone can have a good say here without unnecessary conflict.

When they bring in the merge thread hack i think the problem will soon diminish. Any troll threads can be moved into a single Anti Union thread where they can argue to their hearts content. its a hell of a lot easier than split these posts into new threads then locking them.

I don't think the Union fans on this forum mind the anti Union posts that have some factual basis to them and can actually be backed up. Look at the Dim one, he made a statement that he couldn't back up and was proved to be wrong. He soon left the thread alone.

Most of the problem is caused by less than a handfull of people. Its easy enough to move their repeated meaningless posts into a single thread.

I can't wait until they instal that hack.

What about a separate "League vs Union" forum? Have fun whoever gets the moderator job for it though! :D

In a perfect world the trolls would simply grow up and the problem would solve itself. In the meantime I guess the merged thread idea will do. Perhaps the single thread should be stickied and an announcement put up informing everyone that any anti-union threads will be merged into the sticky.

I've got no problem with people criticising union or the WC, provided they bring something new & constructive to the table.

I wish some people could realise that by reacting to the media generated hype, or certain journalists/commentators sensationalist opinions, theyre actually giving a platform or extra mileage to information that doesnt deserve it. Leave it and it dies then and there.

I also wish some people would realise virtually all of us are on the same page as far as RL is concerned. We love it. As far as I'm concerned, braindead "us vs them" "yawnion is boring" "league players are superior" posts just demean the great game of RL. They make us all look paranoid, defensive & insecure. I'm damned proud to be a RL supporter, but there are times that other supporters make me cringe.

I think this sort of forum has been done to death in the past. The one on the old world13 site was good at first, but the arguments went round and round in circles for years.
Having said that, it might let a proper Union forum get started if the main topic of dissent was separated off.
It would also be very easy to move any topics from one forum to the other if they started to go down that road.

I think this is an idea that deserves a closer look.

Take up the batton Roopy we have complete faith in you ;-)

Also good post A4E, I tend to agree, as you say we are all league fans or we wouldnt be on this site. But this doesnt mean that we do not follow other sports and are not so narrow minded or insecure to express our positive comments about another sport. And yes on a union site there are just as many red necks there with little to add to a constructive debate. I am sure they would be more than keen to swap abuse with the trolls we have here

A new League v Union v AFL section has been set up.

If any threads start up in this section that people feel would be better placed in that section, any of the moderators can easily send the thread over, so pm any of us about threads you want shifted, or simply leave a note in this thread. I can't promise to agree, but I'll have a look for sure.

Another trick we can do is to split a thread that is getting off track, thereby moving posts to a new thread of their own - so if a good thread is hijacked we can split off the offending posts and move them over to LvUvA under a new heading.

Thanks to Tommo for the idea. I have a feeling that the problem can now be solved.
