New Zealand sports fans just don’t seem to understand how professionalism has changed the way clubs are forced to operate in the cut-throat world we now live in.
Over the past few weeks the Warriors have seen three well-known, quality players announce that they will leave the club and the reaction by the greater majority of fans is that this is a bad thing and that the club is not doing enough, if anything, to try and re-sign the trio.
Between them Awen Guttenbeil, Clinton Toopi and Brent Webb boast 391 NRL games, 39 Tests and an amount of respect that cannot be measured by statistics but in the ever-changing world of rugby league, the club cannot simply afford to keep these players at Mt Smart Stadium beyond this season.
In allowing those three veterans to move on in 2007 the club has shed around $1 million in payroll for next year. Add to that the money saved in releasing Toopi and now Sharks prop Richard Villasanti earlier in the year and you have another $200,000 saved for this season.
In waiving those veteran players goodbye, the club has secured their immediate future by re-signing promising youngsters like Grant Rovelli, Simon Mannering, Patrick Ah Van, Manu Vatuvei and Sam Rapira to longer deals and brought young Australian talents Wade McKinnon and Michael Witt across the Tasman with the money saved.
Both are players of real promise and come at a far cheaper price than their predecessors.
In the case of Mannering, the Warriors have a ready-made replacement for Toopi and, on current form; he is just as a good a player for a fraction of the price.
The same can be said for McKinnon.
By signing these youngsters to longer deals it also gives you the ability to sign bigger names down the track.
If Rovelli turns out to be the next big thing over the next season or two he could be earning a very small salary in 2009 and 2010 for what he is worth. The Cowboys achieved that when they signed Johnathan Thurston from the Bulldogs as a fringe first-grader that had promise and he turns out to be one of the game’s elite players within a season.
If five turn out to be future stars, the club could have basically signed them all for less than half a million a season and would then have plenty of money to chase even bigger names for one or two year deals.
It is this recipe for success that clubs are trying to use and why clubs like Brisbane and Canberra have been so good for so long.
Guttenbeil, Toopi and Webb are quality players and will be missed for sure – both as players and as blokes as well – but sport is now a business and value-for-money the Warriors have made all the right moves this season.
Without knowing the specifics of their current contracts, I would guess that there is still enough money left under the salary cap next season to sign one or two established players but it appears that the Warriors are close to done on the recruitment front this year.
After the $500,000 fine for breaching the cap at the beginning of the season, their current operating loss and their highly-publicised ownership wrangle, it may be prudent to hold off spending any more money simply for the sake of it and especially now that most of the off-contract players have deals in place for next season.
For that reason, a George Gatis-type signing might be all they do from here on in and, from where I sit, I’d rate that a nine out of 10.

the word 'talent' and michael witt shouldnt be mentioned in the same breath.

how long is a youngster "promising"

who is the winner here, the Aust RL, NRL, or the NZRL or, nobody.
Are the warriors developing these aussie 'youngsters' for aussie ?

or maybe, they should be developing these kiwi 'youngsters' for NZ ?

it appears like i,m flogging a dead horse here, for every 1 aussie signed, 1 kiwi kid misses out and goes offshore. dont seem right to me.

Yes it is Oz. Are all the Sharks players from Cronulla? How about when we were the Auckland Warriors. All from Auckland?

It's limited as you limit your options, which creates an immediate handicap. As if we haven't been handicapped enough with inept management.

Yeah it is very limited thinking by some fans. Yes you know who you are. if you can't be ready and willing to accept that this is the way the world works then go crawl back into your 'perfect little world' At least there are people out there that recognize exactly what Dale is saying.

Do the words 'thinking outside the box' ever occur to you ozbash? Because it is very clear you don't do it much if at all. McKinnon and Witt haven't played for this side and yet you go all ape about their talents. Exactly how much talent do you think they have? I can't say I know because I don't and until I see them play for this side I'll know for sure.
Maybe in a few years time you and others will get your wish and the Warriors will be the type of 'kiwi' team you want but until we've got that entire squad down and ready that theory won't exisit. As I find myself saying over and over again; if and when the Warriors are playing well, winning games and showing the rest of the nrl exactly what they are capable of even when they have australians, fijians or even aliens for that matter then it's all well and truely good because this is a club in an Australian compeition. and NOT just a team oritentated to forfill needs for the international scene.

One question: Do you want the Warriors as an NRL club to be able to win the premiership on a regular basis? Or are you more into wanting to seeing the Kiwis side kicking butt against the Roos, Brits and in the WC?

I know I'd say yes to both; and I know the Kiwis side will and can do that, but the Warriors can't if they have an unbalanced team. There is always going to be a mix of culltures with this group as there is a bit of kiwi flavour with the Tigers and Bulldogs. Both fronts of having kiwis here and abroad boards well for the international scene. It shows alot about how good our kids are if other clubs are highly interested in them. It doesn't mean every kiwi leaving is going to want to play for Australia/NSW/Qld. It just means they are going there to explore, to learn and to grow and when they are there in the big time playing for the Kiwis, their real country. They would bring with them somethig that little bit different to the international scene. Instead of all being from the same side and having not learnt a heck of a lot.

Would Benji be the player he is today if he was with the Warriors? Same with other guys? I'm not implying they wouldn't be successful here but their success would be vastly different.

Also the Aussies develop players for us as well.

See: Marshall,Benji

See:Bill-Williams,Sonny

etc

Ozbash maybe you should just stick to supporting the Kiwis if you are so obsessed with having every player a NZ'er.

i support the kiwis alright, obsession ? maybe, could be a healthy obsession.

with regard to benji, using that analogy stacey jones was wasted at the warriors.....

his full potential wasnt tapped....

ive got nothing against our aussie major signings at the warriors, i do have something against the philosophy of cheap aussie hacks being signed up instead of looking at the local talent.

maybe thats an obsession ? whats yours CC ?

Those Aussie 'hacks' are better than pretty much all bartercard players.

All the decent NZ juniors get snapped up to go to Aussie at an early age or are at the Warriors and there is few of them left in the Bartercard.

But of course when the 2002 Warrors were going so well you wouldn't haven't had a problem at all with all the Aussies in the squad right?

Man John Carlaw,Kevin Campion,Richard Villisanti,Brent Webb and Justin Murphy shouldn't have been in that team aye?

What am I not surprised? Every 'aussie hack' would be ten times the person you are right now.
