NSWRL Season Launch
Tuesday, 11th March 2008
The NSW Rugby League today launched its two major competitions for Rugby League’s Centenary year which will both be covered in a new television show on Fox Sports.
From May this season Fox Sports will broadcast a NSWRL program which features a match of the day and comprehensive highlights, statitistcs and previews from the VB NSW Cup and Jim Beam Cup.
NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said the program, which will air each Wednesday at 5pm, would showcase the strengthening standard of the NSWRL’s two major competitions.
“It’s certainly exciting for us and it could not have come at a better time considering we have a number of new teams entering both competitions this year,” Carr said.
“It’s also very exciting for the teams that are participating because it will obviously give some assistance to them in attracting sponsors.”
The VB NSW Cup is set to showcase top-tier Rugby League to suburban venues throughout the year, with several NRL clubs set to use the competition as a vehicle to play their top-25 squad players who are over the age of 20.
Newtown Jets coach Greg Matterson said the VB NSW Cup’s schedule – which runs separately to the NRL – would benefit his players’ first-grade aspirations as NRL coaches would now have more time to view their performances.
“At the moment the Roosters’ first five or six games are on Friday night and we are on Saturday, so supporters can go and watch both games,” Matterson said.
“And the coaching staff can relax and watch either game – so I can watch first grade or Brad Fittler can come and watch the NSW Cup. They can actually take the time to watch (VB NSW Cup) players instead of being busy preparing the first-grade side.”
Matterson said the VB NSW Cup would also give fans a chance to see first-grade stars in action on a weekly basis, starting from Round One this weekend.
“This week I’ve got (Roosters first-graders) Sam Perrett and Mitch Aubusson coming back to VB NSW Cup – one’s an international and one is a first-grader,” Matterson said.
“I talked to them both last night and their heads are right around getting stuck into the VB NSW Cup. All the players know they need to be playing consistent football at this level to make it in first-grade.”
The Jim Beam Cup, which this year welcomes new teams the Western Australian Reds, Southern Sydney Sharks and Campbelltown Eagles, will again feature its successful salary-cap and points-based structure.
A Jim Beam Cup representative side will contest the annual Quad Series tournament, which will also feature the NSW Country side, the QLD Rangers and for the first time, the Great Britain Community Lions.
Southern Sydney Sharks’ Ian Baddock said the Jim Beam Cup’s progressive nature and salary-cap encouraged clubs to focus on developing their junior talent.
“I think that in Jim Beam Cup, it’s at an age where the players are just hungry to go forward,” Baddock said.
“I think it is the ideal grade for players which might not be right up to first-grade standard but aren’t too far away either, and that need to build their games.
“It’s very, very exciting for us to be involved in the competition and we’re looking forward to a great season.”
