Two more franchises by 2010

Hi,

I don't really have much more detail but the NRL is particularly keen on expansion at the moment given the inroads of AFL and ARU so as a result, you can expect two more teams to be in the NRL by 2010

Sourced the information off an admin employee in the NRL that is well and truly in the know. Take it as gospel or otherwise but you have heard this news here first....Has been hotly discussed at the NRL bunker over the last couple of weeks

Cheers,
Moffo

Where do they think the extra 40odd first grade standard players are gonna come from..

from the 20 who go to English Super League

10 who could possibly have gone to yawnyawn

and 10 superstars from premierleague and qld cup like tim smith etc

Look at all the Aussies running around in England for one example. Brisbane having Test/SOO players on the bench and in reserves. The Qld Cup IMO has alot of NRL standard players that could go well given the chance.

I'd believe it Moffo, I reckon that the NRL is prime for expansion.

The BIG guess though is where will they be?

5 options for mine:

-Perth
-Central Coast
-Adelaide
-Wellington
-Christchurch

Perth and Adelaide are what I think are most likely, with the NRL upping the incentive for a team to relocate to the CC.

One day people will live on Jupiter and drive around in little buggys with large knobby tyres.

It would be great if this happens. It would be great if the Central Coast Bears were added.

Love to see it, Moffo.

Looks like Wellington is a shoe in.

The others?

Personally I'd love the justice of the Bears back at Gosford. But after knocking 'em back so many times, I'd have to say Gosford have as much chance as Amanda Vanstone winning Miss World.

The romantic idea of Perth and Adelaide is not really backed up with anything. News already killed 'em off once. Little development has gone into Adelaide since the SLWar.
Perth seems to have a better base, but it also has the new S12 side. Can a city squeeze in a League franchise next to what it has at the moment?

The trouble with a new franchise is the guarantee that it can attract an average crowd. Both Perth's and Adelaide's crowds dwindled toward their respective ends. Today, with average crowds up to around 14-15'000, we see Canberra and Melbourne not keeping up. Can we honestly expect Adelaide and Perth to do so, given the tighter markets there?

Is there another answer we are not thinking of? A second Brisbane side? Redcliffe?

I think we should fine this one away, and keep reviewing it periodically...

I think it should be done in this order now

1 Wellington
2 Central Coast
3 Christchurch
4 Adelaide
5 PNG
6 Pasific
7 Perth ( i just think that the NRL has left it too late and that union have gotten in quicker! )

Might be a silly suggestion, i dont profess to have any idea of the local league situation up there but a mate had told me that league is very popular in the N.T. would maybe a side based up there say in Darwin be more preferable to a team based in Adelaide or Perth?

I'll go Perth and a 2nd NZ team (South Island)

I wonder why.

No way will Adelaide ever have a team, based purely on corporate support. Adelaide is a stagnating city, forecasted population growth virtually nil for next 50 years. It would be equal to AFL putting ateam in Darwin or Hobart.
