The St George Illawarra Dragons announced on Monday that Tyrone McCarthy has agreed to terms on a two-year contract that will see him join the Club from next season until at least the end of 2017.
The Ireland international lock-forward, who can also play in the second-row and was named vice-captain of the Wolfhounds during their 2013 World Cup campaign, is presently contracted to Super League Hull-Kingston Rovers.
McCarthy, 27, made his first-grade debut for the Warrington Wolves during the 2009 campaign before joining the Northern Pride (2014) and Hull KR (2015).
“Tyrone is a versatile player who has shown a keen interest in testing himself at the highest level in the NRL competition,” said Dragons Director of Recruitment & Retention Peter Mulholland.
“He has established himself in the Super League competition and has a sound understanding of what is required to compete in the NRL from his time playing for the Northern Pride in the Queensland Cup.
“We look forward to welcoming him to the Club during the off-season.”
McCarthy has won two Challenge Cup titles whilst with the Wolves (2009, 2012) and has played 72 first-grade games to date (Super League).
He will join the Dragons in November.

I have watched him a couple of times especially when he played for the Pride.

I was surprised he came out in the first place and thought he must be here on a working holiday but he went about his business very very well.

Good defender, got a good passing game and tough he'll fit in well.

He's not very big but I've seen him play and he has great footwork and throws a pretty good pass.
Good signing but I hope he's bulked up a bit since he was with the Pride.

For wire..
Cooper was a prop with consistency problems but at his best was very good. We played him loose, but in a prop type role.

McCarthy was a second row who is a strong runner and solid tackler. At his best he can do damage but not as much as Cooper.
Cooper has a bit more skill to, but more errors in him.

To be honest I would have thought there were aussies available to do what he does and he will struggle to make a mark.
But I thought that about Cooper to, so we will see!!

3 English lads with 2 from Warrington means I'm really going to have to start really paying attention to the dragons next year. Supporting saints and a famous red V takes some getting used to though! :D
