Uate in play: Smith keen to keep his options open
BY BRETT KEEBLE

KNIGHTS coach Brian Smith said rookie sensation Aku Uate was still a chance of playing against South Sydney at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Sunday, despite not being named yesterday in Newcastle's 17.

Uate, utility forward Mark Taufua and playmaker Scott Dureau were included as three extra fresh reserves in a 20-man squad bolstered by the inclusion of representative players Danny Buderus, Steve Simpson, Jarrod Mullen and Adam MacDougall.

The 20-year-old Fijian flyer scored a try in an impressive debut against Cronulla last Saturday, but MacDougall's anticipated return in the centres pushed Cooper Vuna to the left wing and Uate to the extended bench.

MacDougall missed the 16-13 loss to the Sharks with a calf strain, but Smith was certain he would play. The coach was not so sure Uate would not play.

"There's a little bit to be sorted out at the back there, so we'll see how that goes this week," Smith said.

"We don't nail ourselves down to picking our team on Tuesday and making sure that's how it is.

"We'd like to see how some of the boys go recovering from last weekend and getting themselves ready to go again.

"At this stage I think MacDougall will play, Buderus is a very strong chance, and I'd say Mullo and Simmo are likely, but both will need to improve as the week goes on."

Buderus has missed the past three games with a knee injury, Simpson has been a late withdrawal from the past two matches with a hip then an ankle problem, and Mullen suffered deep bruising to his left hip against the Sharks.

"Our boys have competed really well without them. If they keep doing that, then the boys coming back becomes a bonus," Smith said.

"They're not going to come back and just win it on their own. We need everyone to keep contributing like they have been, and I think a lot of those boys have shown real signs of improvement in their confidence."

Souths will be without dynamic dummy half Issac Luke, who accepted a one-game suspension for a dangerous throw in the 36-12 loss to the Tigers last Sunday.

"He's a tidy little player and he's been a real spark for them, but we've still got five or six out, so I'm not going to cry tears for them," Smith said.

The Rabbitohs have promoted George Ndaira to hooker to replace Luke.

AAP reports: Veteran second-rower Nathan Hindmarsh says the Eels must improve their "rubbish" goal-line defence when they take on North Queensland in their clash at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.

The Eels need a win to keep their finals hopes afloat after losses to Manly, Souths and Penrith sent them three points adrift of the top eight.

"Our goal-line defence is pretty rubbish at the moment," Hindmarsh said.

"You can't tackle guys standing on the try line, they're just going to fall over and score."

An injury-ravaged Cowboys will be equally desperate as they try to end a club record 11-match losing streak. They will welcome the return of Test prop Carl Webb.

Brisbane have Test centre Justin Hodges back from suspension for their clash with Cronulla, who will field an unchanged side.

Canberra have replaced suspended halfback Todd Carney with young star Marc Herbert for the match with Gold Coast, who shifted Ashley Harrison to five-eighth for the injured Mat Rogers.

Wests Tigers captain Brett Hodgson returns from injury for Saturday's trip to Penrith.

Manly veteran Steve Menzies will play five-eighth in place of the injured Jamie Lyon for Sunday's match with the Sydney Roosters. AAP

Is Tuesday too early to name the teams? It seems stupid to me its not enough time to see if players will be fit or npt. Or do they do it for TAB purposes?

Uate 99% chance will be there.

Mullen would be barely 50/50 though they might push him to play in a must win game.

Bit of suspicion involved around Steve Simpson that seems a bit off. I don't think his injuries are anywhere near as bad as made out to be and I am kinda baffled as to why.

Do you have any inside info on this Karma or is it guess work?

Im not having a stick at you or anything, you just seem pretty sure is all.

Just early week talk among a few people who claim to know.

To their credit they were spot on last week.

I keep hearing about Simpson's injuries not being as bad as made out in the media, and Pika touched on this himself the other day.

Interested in Pika's thoughts.

Hope Uate plays... What would happen to Kidley if Bedsy back? Just full time fullback?

Given Bedsys recent injury Id say he prob wont play the full 80min so Gids would likely play his roving role for at least part of the game when Danny gets a rest.

On the injury side of things I think Karma is correct.

Mullo is a chance, but as the week wears on and he has his hip drained, there will be a clearer picture.

If Steve does not play, I am baffled as to why.

I've got to say...and I have been a doubter...but Aku was pretty bloody good today. Obviously there is some work to do yet, but he held his own today. His test will be when we play a decent side (which is coming up) but I was pretty impressed.

In his last few games of NSW cup i've really come to the conclusion that Aku is a born fullback - pity we can't use him there - or maybe we can find a way to use him as fullback in attack and Kidley in defence, which uses the best of both of them.

I thought he was good last week considering the hype and pressure of being on debut. Thought he was great today. Got involved and he, Patto and Jr looked dangerous every time we went down that side of the field.

Not to start the Dureau debate again, but we had good involvement down both sides of the field today because we had an actual halfback on the field. IMO.

Probably Canberra rd 2 2006???? Just a guess but we scored about 12 that day. Incidently the halfback had a fair game that day to...

whenever he's been on the field the last 3 weeks, we've scored pretty much at will.

he must be our full time #7.

He didn't play great but he did his job. Hate to say this but with Smith's hard on for having Bailey at 6, I might prefer Mullen to stay out a little longer and fully recover himself since it's the only way Dureau is going to play games at halfback.

I agree he had a mixed game, but on the last 6 weeks evidence we are a much more dangerous side when he's on the field.

Dureau definitely solid today.

Still does some incredibly frustrating things ( like killing attacking raids with poor last tackle options - grubbers that too easily go dead, cross kicks that aren't high enough etc ) , and was helped by a very poor Rabbitohs team, but still very solid.

Credit must go to Brian Smith. At least our team throws the ball around in our own half, and for the standard of NRL this year which is overall boring and mistake free, the Knights style is refreshing and great to watch.
