ICAC probes UNE manager corruption claims
By Sarah Gerathy

The New South Wales corruption watchdog has heard allegations that a manager at the University of New England used his position to get jobs for friends and relatives, and approved payment of false invoices.
Colin McCallum oversaw the tender process as campus services manager for the university at Armidale from 2003 until last year.
A hearing at the Independent Commission Against Corruption has heard that during that time he favoured the application of four different contractors and approved false invoices they submitted.
The ICAC heard that in exchange the contractors treated Mr McCallum to expensive dinners, delivered beer to his department's office on Fridays and other perks.
Under questioning he agreed that he had also asked two of the contractors to hire a friend and his daughter, then later signed a false declaration about how his daughter got the job to cover his tracks.
Mr McCallum is also accused of convincing one of the contractors, Quad Services, to sponsor the New England Rugby Union club.
The ICAC heart that as the rugby club's executive officer Mr McCallum personally received 10 per cent of the sponsorship fee.
Mr McCallum also allegedly gave the rugby club free access to university facilities, by lying to university staff about a non-existent sponsorship arrangement.
ENDS
The New England Rugby Union club is in fact the New England Rugby Union, the zone that runs the whole sport in the area and when it says he is the "executive officer of the rugby club" they actually mean he is the president of the zone.
