Gallop: league raids only hurt union

NRL chief executive David Gallop has warned rugby union officials they will be creating dissension in their own ranks if they follow through on a planned raid of Toyota Cup talent.
NSWRU high performance manager David Nucifora told The Daily Telegraph yesterday that the Waratahs were set to pounce on some of the 152 National Youth Competition players who would be too old to play in the under-20s next year.
"We touched a raw nerve a while ago when we suggested what rugby union people have been suggesting all along,'' Gallop said.
"That is, the impact on rugby union's own upcoming players if they lose their places to a rugby league player, which people like Dan Crowley remarked on.''
Gallop said there was no immediate prospect of putting a new competition in between the Toyota Cup and NRL.
"The NSW Cup and the Jim Beam Cup remain strong competitions, as does the Queensland Cup,'' he said.

No one in league listens to or respects Gallop, what makes him think the rugby guys will?

Bottom line is that all teams should identify talent wherever it is. The players in each code don't walk around with chips on their shoulders - it's just some fans and administrators who don't understand footy at all. Gallop is the pin-up boy for these idiots.

The NSW Cup and Qld Cup are both stronger standard of competition that the NYC and both will provide a good pathway for NYC players who are too old for the NYC next year.

There is no value in bumping the age up to Under-23s because then only very few 18, 19 and 20 years olds will make it.

Bulldogs recruitment head Peter Mulholland has 13 NYC players who turn 21 next year, but can only graduate eight to the club's NSW Cup side.
This is nothing different than what would happen in previous years with Jersey Flegg. Not every player is good enough to make the open age competition.

Player agent Sam Ayoub said today's NYC stars could only expect to earn between $3000 and $8000 in the NSW Cup.
If a players is a real star player then they will earn more than $3000 to $8000.
