Union Scrums

THE TEAM WHO IS FEEDING THE SCRUM DESERVES TO GET THE BALL, THAS WHY THEY ARE FEEDING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE

LEAGUE SCRUMS are
quick
fast
efficient
tidy
normally only set once
and theres even the occasional biff

Just because something is competitive, doesn't mean its a good thing. Rugby scrums are convoluted diversions from the real action. They also serve to clog the field up with 6 fat, hopeless players. No positives for me.

6?? that is a league srum my friend.

Id like to see you standing next to a member of a S12 tight five and say they are fat and hopeless.

Brad Thorn - fat and hopeless

Brendan Cannon - fat and hopeless

Justin Harrison - fat and hopeless

Matt Dunning - fat and hopeless (Ok - Matt is a bit pudgy)

and most league forwards wouldnt survive five minutes in a union scrum, so what is your point?

6 is the number of front-rowers genius. 3 + 3. Try telling me those guys aren't fat (well, ok, they are also very muscular, but hardly streamlined athletes). Keven Mealamu and Keith Wood are probably the only union front-rowers I can think of in the last 5-10 years who actually had genuine ball carrying skills. Others, like Kees Meeuws, are reasonable, but don't warrant a place on the same field as the real players, expect as glorified shovers.

Brad Thorn is a lock who should really be playing at 6 or 8, and I've got no beef with those guys.

Justin Harrison only makes the team cos he's tall, therefore useful in the line-out, another diversion from real action which is also messy and convoluted. Around the field, again, nothing to offer.

Brendan Cannon- LOL. Slow old man. Please.

I don't see what me standing next to them has to do with anything. I never claimed to be an international class sporsman.

Thanks Thierry, now I understand where the six comes from, it wasnt 'that' obvious in your original statement.

I never claimed to be an international class sportsman either, but I can appreciate that different sports have different rules, which therefore require different 'athletes'.

Regardless of whether you were standing next to him or not, I would still like to the see the reaction of an international union prop if you called him fat and hopeless.

Played against the top side in our comp on Saturday and our scrum was a disaster.

I reckon I was getting into a decent position and at least putting on some sort of hit but our 2nd row wasn't hearing the call of engage so we were getting steamrolled backwards a second later. Couple of disastrous efforts before half time and our hooker called for uncontested. Dont blame him either

Away on hols now and am considering having a run in the Tassie comp!

As a fan of both union and league, I have to say that the scrums suit both games.

Since union has unlimited tackles, more oppertunities need to be given for a turnover, this is why lineouts, scrums (remember that you can always get that loose head to turn the scrum around), rucks and mauls are a good, because under league rules, teams could potentially hold onto the ball until someone knocks it on or passes forward making it boring, and possibally one-sided.

In a league game, obviously a turnover will come after five tackles (Should the team choose to kick then). This makes turnover oppertunities such as that of the contesting scrum, linouts and rucks etc. not really needed, because the game can still flow without them.

Scrums is what keeps the tight 5 an important peice of the puzzle. You dominate the scrums, and line-outs, team normally enjoys most of the possession, goes a long way to winning the game. In saying that, as a front rower I have to say it's not too tough, the only problems are if the props can't hold up the scrum, than the hooker will lose out, and if the second rowers don't have good technique(body height, bind tight) than scrums start to be a key phase of the game, however most of the time this isn't the case.

I am not a troll, i am more like big bily goat gruff

Thanks for the help everyone, mostly sensible intelligent responses (with the occassional obligatory mindless dribble thrown in).

Many RL fans don't see the points above. Scrums determine how much quality ball the backs get. Sure there aren't many won against the feed, but as a former halfback, I can honestly say that passing the ball from a stationary scrum is a hell of a lot easier than one that is going backwards.

I've even had a scrum collapse on me as I was reaching in to get the ball...bloody soft front row!!

Well said Thomas and I think the rules have change where if you can twist or turn the oppositions scrum to 90dg you get to put in the ball .

Dimitri is a expert at union because he watch it so many times . I wonder how Dimitri will feel if he was in a union scrum ?
When you have eight Argentina's forwards pushing from the other end and five of your own pushing from behind ?
I think the league props wouldn't even last five minutes too .
