I've seen a few guys walking around UOW in Sharks jerseys, tracksuits, jumpers, and alike.

Just wondering, does anyone here, besides me, go to Wollongong Uni??

Myself and NthCronLocal also make the trek down to the gong.. As you both have pointed out, the shire contigent down there is VERY, VERY strong..

I think ShireShark goes there as well, or at least he went to the cocktail or 'keg'tail party the law society put on over Easter.

I went there for four years. Graduated from commerce last year.

There is alot of resentment from the wollongong locals to the shire commuters. They see us as privilidged rich kids.

Going there also awakened me to how much of a raw deal that league fans in the illawarra have been dealt. A huge league city, their team swallowed up and no longer in existence.

Newman the reason they lost their side was no one went. Simple as that.

My wife and all her family and friends are from the Gong. THey all used to bang on about how big a group of fans they were yet out of 30 odd people not one went to a single game in their last couple of years.

A ground that size in a one team town should have been filled week in week out. They could barely crack it for a half. Hence they went broke.

Noone to blame but themselves.

I suppose youre right. I lived in the gong for about two years and I met a whole bunch of people who were passionate about the game, and were filthy that the Illawarra wasnt properly "represented". These people arent interested in the dragons and have since lost interest in the game. Whether or not they attended games was something I dont know.

Personally, I still think its a bit of a shame that one of the major cities in NSW doesnt have its own team.

Going to uni at the gong was one of the best times of my life though. Booze, women, surfing and punk rock.

I wouldnt call it resentment, but there's a definite feeling there, they think it's funny that we know we're better just because we come from the Shire and because for the most part we have a lot more money than them and dont do it so tough

Around academic circles, Wollongong Uni is referred to as the Sutherland Shire Day Care Centre

Yeah there is a divide between the shire and the Wollongong people. If your from the shire you hang at Mackinnon. If your from Wollongong you hang down the Uni bar way. The only time i go down that way is if its to hit the beers, or computer rooms.

Uni is full of weirdo's from eveywhere.

I dont rate MacKinnon
There's nothing doing there!!
I prefer the bar

On Monday I had the worst hangover and the pain was compounded by the vast array of freaks I observed down there. Must have been a full moon or something, because everyone had crawled out from under their rocks.

And who wouldnt they resent the shire with attitudes like that? That sort of elitist trash is the reason why I will never again live in the shire.

I was also one of the "freaks" that used to hang out down the unibar way. We used to laugh at the rich girls from the shire and how pathetic, material and stupid they were. Good times.

Never really thought about this, but what do the UOW people here think the ratio of Shire/Wollongong students is at the Uni?

...and yes I also attend the gong.

The resentment comes from the fact that "Shire people" get an extra 2 marks to boost their UAI when applying for admission! Wollongong people get 3 extra marks, and Shire people get 5. How is that fair?!?

Also, there is a feeling that "Shire people" only associate with themselves, and want nothing to do with those from Wollongong. That's where it comes from.

Having said that, around 50% of the people in my course are from the Shire. Us 'Gong guys always used to bag them out, mainly due to their attitudes towards people who weren't from Sutho.

3 years in to our degree, and we've all finally worked out that the difference between "us" and "them" isn't that big. They enjoy our company, and we enjoy theirs. (Although it probably helps that I walk around almost every day in a Sharks jersey or jumper of whatever!).

P.S.
The Shire girls are much hotter than the Gong girls!

Now if only they'd talk to us more.......

I'm pretty sure they still do it, so you should have.
They add them on when you apply for a course.

I got into what i wanted anyway so it doesnt matter. I think the shire has only in the last year been recognised a catchment area of UOW and the extra marks have not come in until recently. Could be wrong though. The extra marks certainly didnt operate when i did yr 12 though.
