On Sunday, the local Manly grand finals were held at Brookvale Oval. In the 19's competition, the match was played out between the Champions of the Souths and Easts comp, as well as minor premiers in the Manly comp, South-Eastern.
In the other corner were the Valley United Spartans. The second best team in the Manly competition, who had previously beaten SE in the 3 previous encounters, including the first semi final.
Now, I don't know how it is over in Manly, but I have never ever been in front of such a hostile crowd like that - and that is saying something because if you've ever been to La Perouse, then you'll know what hostile is.
As we were warming up, some of the scumbags spat at us, and abused the Aboriginal members of our side. The cat calls were water off a ducks back. When you are the best, you get used to it. The spitting and abuse of our team members however, was not water off a ducks back.
I am just curious to know if this sort of behaviour is considered acceptable for junior footballers to adhere to over on the North shore. I thought it was bad in Souths having to play at Redfern, but Brookvale takes the cake.
In the end I feel this ultimately cost the Spartans a possible victory. We sucessfully used the insults as added motivation and the end result was us wiping our arses all over Valleys, thrashed them 25-8, meaning that South-Eastern won not only the Souths and Easts comps, but the Manly and the Norths comps.
Thanks for coming Manly!
On a positive note, a lot of people (understandably I can see now) were cheering loudly for us, and not for the Valleys. Those people are to be comended.
