I am currently driving a Subaru Impreza S, top of the line without the turbo, I must say the amount of mechanical grip in the car at speed is completely amazing. It handles like it is on rails in the twisty stuff.
I did step out of a Falcon that I had owned for 7 years; I have 2 more Falcons before that, but since we don't make cars here anymore and I can't support the industry in that way, I went for a Japanese car, and I can honestly say I am enjoying the heck out of it.
Awesome cars. The most fun you can have on the road if you're not a "high roller".
Mine copped a headon with a motorcycle that I estimate to have been doing 100. It protected me quite well.
This week's public safety incidents across the Northern Beaches.

In the pics in the article, you can see how the rear end of the Impreza came off the ground and moved sideways about 40cm after coming to a violent and immediate halt at point of collision. What the pics don't show is the helmet sized hole in the screen right where i was sitting.
The article wrongly states I was uninjured.
Anyway, awesome safe cars. If you have a kid who is getting first car, you could do a lot worse than an Impreza. Keep away from 2.5l engines pre 2013. Non turbo 2.0L engines with 4 cams are the go.
Edit: Article is down the page, the one after the boat that is on fire.
